The G1 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm delivered a performance of authority and timing as Providence produced a career-defining run to secure a commanding victory, marking a milestone moment for Newgate Farm proprietor Henry Field, who celebrated his first Derby success. The Chris Waller-trained colt, by Wootton Bassett, arrived at the race on an upward curve and confirmed his rapid progress with a display that left a strong impression on racegoers and connections alike.

Providence, who had been a maiden earlier in the preparation, has steadily matured through the autumn campaign, showing clear signs of promise before delivering on the big stage.
Ridden with confidence by James McDonald, Providence settled smoothly into rhythm and travelled comfortably throughout the contest, never appearing under pressure as the field approached the decisive stages. When asked to quicken, he responded with authority and drew clear to seal a decisive victory in Australia’s premier staying classic for three-year-olds.
A notable pointer to this success came two weeks earlier when Providence finished a close third in the G3 Rough Habit Plate, a run that hinted at his staying potential and readiness for a step up in class. That performance proved to be a key form reference as he progressed again under top-level conditions.
Bred by Jonathan Munz’s GSA Bloodstock, Providence carries a strong pedigree and commercial story. He was offered through the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft at the 2024 Easter Yearling Sale, where he was purchased for $625,000 by a powerful partnership including China Horse Club, Newgate Farm, Go Bloodstock and Trilogy Racing.
The colt’s dam, Southbank, also has a notable background, having been sourced by Munz through bloodstock agent Dean Hawthorne at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale before going on to be placed at Group 1 level in the Thousand Guineas.
Providence now becomes the 119th individual Group 1-winning Inglis graduate since 2018, underlining the continued influence of the sale ring on elite-level racing outcomes.
Attention now turns to what lies ahead. Newgate Farm’s Henry Field noted strong interest from Hong Kong-based buyers both before and after the race, while Chris Waller has also floated the possibility of targeting the G1 Caulfield Cup during the spring campaign.
“We’ll sit down and talk to Chris over the next few days,” Field said. “He thinks he would make a really nice Caulfield Cup horse but there’s significant interest from Hong Kong as well. We’re running a commercial partnership and need to consider all options, so there’s every chance he could be sold, but it’s too early to confirm anything.”
Field also reflected on the significance of the moment, describing it as a landmark win for the ownership group in classic company.
“It’s a huge thrill to win a Derby and a great result for the partnership. It’s our first Derby success and to do it in these colours makes it even more special,” he added.
Bhima Thoroughbreds’ Mike Fleming praised both the colt’s preparation and the result at auction, noting the strong reception he received as a yearling and the continued success of Wootton Bassett’s progeny at the elite level.
Providence’s performance now stands as a clear statement of his development, with connections expected to map out his next steps in the coming days as international and domestic opportunities continue to emerge.
