A lively Wednesday afternoon at Beverley Racecourse on 27 May produced a series of competitive contests, with impressive performances across the seven-race card. From sharp sprint finishes to determined staying displays, racegoers were treated to an entertaining mix of emerging talent and experienced campaigners on the Yorkshire track.
The opening contest at 2:15pm, The Happy Birthday Joe McCabe Claiming Stakes over five furlongs, went the way of Lairy Mary, who produced a smart front-running display under Duran Fentiman. Breaking alertly from the stalls, the mare travelled strongly throughout and maintained her advantage under pressure in the closing stages. The Class 6 sprint set the tone for an energetic afternoon, with Lairy Mary showing plenty of pace and determination to hold off late challengers.

The second race of the day, The Tigers Trust Restricted Novice Stakes at 2:45pm over seven furlongs and 96 yards, saw Out of This World live up to his name with a polished performance for jockey Clifford Lee. The youngster travelled comfortably throughout before quickening impressively inside the final furlong. The victory suggested there could be more to come from the promising runner, who handled Beverley’s undulating track with maturity beyond his experience.
Racegoers then witnessed a strong handicap performance in the 3:15pm Ward Homes Yorkshire 10th Anniversary Handicap Stakes. This Farh, ridden confidently by Lewis Edmunds, timed his challenge perfectly to secure victory in the Class 5 event over seven furlongs and 96 yards. Edmunds settled the horse in midfield before producing a well-judged run entering the closing stages. Once asked for effort, This Farh responded willingly to pull clear late on and register a deserved success.
The feature middle-distance contest at 3:45pm, The Dr Eddie Moll Handicap Stakes over one mile, one furlong and 207 yards, was claimed by Mao Shang Wong (IRE) under Mark Winn. The winner produced a determined finish after tracking the leaders for much of the race. Turning for home, Mao Shang Wong began to close steadily before finding another gear inside the final furlong to edge ahead. The performance highlighted both stamina and consistency, qualities that proved decisive in a tightly fought handicap.

Lewis Edmunds celebrated a second success of the afternoon in the 4:15pm Connexin’s Full Fibre For All Handicap Stakes over one mile and 100 yards. Penny Ghent delivered a composed display, travelling smoothly before asserting late in the race. Edmunds judged the pace effectively and waited patiently before asking for maximum effort approaching the final furlong. Penny Ghent responded gamely to secure victory in the Class 6 handicap and hand the jockey a memorable double on the card.
The staying contest at 4:50pm, The Up The Tigers Handicap Stakes over one mile and four furlongs, provided another closely contested finish. Sisterandbrother, partnered by Lewis Edmunds, completed the jockey’s treble with a resilient performance. Settled towards the front throughout, the winner stayed on strongly in the straight and held off rivals in determined fashion. The victory capped an excellent afternoon for Edmunds, whose riding was among the standout features of the meeting.
The concluding race at 5:20pm, The Racing Again This Saturday Apprentice Handicap Stakes over five furlongs, saw King of The Jungle (IRE) storm home under apprentice rider Shay Farmer. In a fast-run sprint, the winner showed excellent early pace before digging deep in the closing stages to secure the final victory of the day. Farmer delivered a composed ride and gained a notable success in the apprentice contest, ending the meeting on an exciting note.

Away from the track action, Beverley’s raceday officials ensured smooth proceedings throughout the busy afternoon. The meeting was overseen by Stewards’ Panel Chair Peter Crafts alongside stewards Alan Dempsey and Michael Eyre. Robert Supple and Stuart Turner handled starting duties, while Di Clark served as judge. Veterinary Officer Jon Pycock and the Equine Welfare Integrity team, including Alec Dent, Graham Gray and Victoria Forbes, supervised horse welfare across the card.
The Beverley fixture once again highlighted the racecourse’s reputation for competitive handicaps and opportunities for rising talent. Several winners produced performances suggesting further success could follow during the summer season, particularly Out of This World and Penny Ghent, who both displayed notable improvement.
For Lewis Edmunds, however, the afternoon undoubtedly belonged to him. A superb riding treble aboard This Farh, Penny Ghent and Sisterandbrother demonstrated confidence, patience and tactical awareness around Beverley’s unique layout. His achievements provided one of the defining stories of the meeting and ensured the jockey left Yorkshire with momentum building strongly for the weeks ahead.
