Caspar Fownes moved back to the top of the fiercely contested Hong Kong trainers’ championship on Wednesday night after saddling a double at Happy Valley, while Joao Moreira produced another polished display in the saddle and Zac Purton edged closer to a remarkable career milestone.
The meeting unfolded against the backdrop of one of the tightest trainers’ title races in recent Hong Kong racing history, with every winner carrying added significance as the season approaches its closing weeks.
Hong Kong racing results.
Fownes, now level with Danny Shum on 56 winners but ahead on countback through second-place finishes, reclaimed the outright advantage after victories from Audacious Pursuit and Elegant Life. The margin remains razor-thin, with Mark Newnham still firmly in contention on 53 wins, while Francis Lui, David Hayes and John Size continue to apply pressure further down the standings.
Although much of the anticipation before racing centred on Purton’s pursuit of 2,000 Hong Kong victories, the champion rider was forced to settle for a single success on the night. The Australian still edged closer to the landmark with a winner, two runner-up finishes, a third and a fourth from eight rides.
Moreira instead stole the spotlight with a treble that underlined the impact he has made since returning to Hong Kong earlier this spring.
The Brazilian guided Fownes-trained Audacious Pursuit to victory in the Class 4 Rhine Handicap over 1650 metres before combining with Elegant Life in the second division of the Class 4 Ciron Handicap. He later completed the treble aboard Lucky McQueen for trainer Cody Mo in the opening division of the same contest.
“It’s a good feeling,” Moreira said after the meeting. “I got on some nice horses today. I believed it was meant to be because they got good gates. I’m so happy to be getting opportunities and to be getting them up.”
The performance continued an impressive partnership between Moreira and Fownes, who reunited in April when the Brazilian rider returned to Hong Kong in a retained role for the stable and immediately struck with four winners at Happy Valley.
Fownes was particularly complimentary of Moreira’s handling of Audacious Pursuit.
“It was perfection by Joao to get him on the rail and save the ground,” Fownes said. “When you just win by a small margin, that’s everything really. You need good rides, good draws, and the rest takes care of itself.
“It’s why Hong Kong racing is so exciting. We’re trying our best, that’s for sure.”
Purton’s lone winner arrived aboard Armor Golden Eagle in the Class 3 Sauternes’s Cup Handicap, giving Newnham his 53rd success of the campaign and keeping the trainer within striking distance in the championship chase.
“He was in the ideal spot,” Newnham said. “It was a carbon copy of last start really, just in the right position. He’s a good improving horse.”
The trainer added that his stable’s recent sequence of placings had been frustrating despite horses continuing to perform consistently.
Elsewhere on the card, apprentice rider Britney Wong enjoyed a memorable breakthrough when Son Pak Fu delivered her first Happy Valley victory in the Class 3 Seine Handicap for trainer Tony Cruz.
After several near misses at the city circuit, Wong finally secured the milestone when Son Pak Fu surged through along the rail to deny Gummy Gummy by a short head.
“I am very glad,” Wong said. “Before this win I had ridden eight seconds here already, so we were that close but not winning. I’m very happy that we got the win today and very grateful for Tony’s support.”
The success capped a productive evening for Cruz, whose veteran sprinter Superb Capitalist produced a strong late burst under Angus Chung to claim the Class 3 Garonne Handicap over 1000 metres.
Jerry Chau also strengthened his position in the race for the Tony Cruz Award for leading homegrown jockey after steering Basic Instinct to victory for trainer Me Tsui in the Class 5 Dordogne Handicap. The win was notable as the gelding had failed to finish inside the first four in his previous 15 starts.
Karis Teetan partnered Rosewood Fleetwood to victory in the Class 5 Loire Handicap over 2200 metres, handing Ricky Yiu his 1,099th Hong Kong winner, while Derek Leung delivered a composed ride aboard Bright Day to continue trainer Manfred Man’s productive campaign in the third division of the Ciron Handicap.
Attention now turns to Sha Tin on Sunday, where a strong programme featuring the Group 3 Sha Tin Vase Handicap and the Lion Rock Trophy Handicap will continue the momentum of an increasingly dramatic Hong Kong racing season.
