Set against the backdrop of one of Britain’s distinctive summer jumping venues, Cartmel Racecourse will present a six-race evening programme on Wednesday, 27 May, bringing together hurdle and steeple chase contests across a range of distances and class levels. The meeting will feature races for horses aged four years and above, with prize money ranging from £6,050 to £12,850, while the schedule will combine maiden performers, established handicappers and novice chasers.
The evening card will begin at 6:08pm and conclude at 8:38pm, with race distances extending from 2m 1f to more than three miles, creating a varied examination of speed, stamina and jumping ability throughout the programme.
A competitive start to the meeting will come through the Maiden Hurdle (Class 4) (GBB Race) at 6:08pm, run over 2m 1f 46y with £10,000 in prize money available for horses aged 4YO and above. A field of seven runners is expected to take part, featuring Etretat, Flying Ace, Masekela, Ribble River, Colinski and Military Cross among the entries. The opening contest will likely provide several developing runners with an opportunity to establish themselves in hurdle company.
The programme will continue with the In Memory of Jimmy Latham Selling Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) at 6:38pm, another race over 2m 1f 46y carrying a £6,050 purse for horses aged 4YO and above. A larger field of 13 runners is expected to line up, including Zhang Fei, Book of Secrets, Zamond, Justlikefire, Mojo Ego and Frank Stamper. The field size could contribute to a more closely contested handicap event.
Attention will then move to the Traffic Management Handicap Hurdle (Class 4) at 7:08pm, a contest staged over 2m 6f 31y with £8,050 prize money available. Open to horses aged 4YO and above, the race is expected to feature 11 runners, including Sea The Clouds, Musique de Fee, Hillview, Bittalemon, Dickens and Got Grey. The increased distance may place greater emphasis on stamina during the latter stages.
The card’s principal staying test will arrive through the Cartmel Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) at 7:38pm, run over 3m 1f 83y and carrying £7,000 in prize money. Open to horses aged 4YO and above, the race is expected to attract 11 runners, among them Wee Alki, Ebselysees, Jack Sprat, Secret Secret, I Am Spider Man and Dusky Days. The extended distance will likely make endurance a decisive factor.
The evening’s highest-value contest will take place at 8:08pm through the Birchall Trust Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 3) (GBB Race) over 2m 5f 34y. Carrying £12,850 in prize money and restricted to horses aged 5YO and above, the race is expected to feature three runners: Off The Jury, Caughtinyourtrance and Hostile Hotelier. Despite the smaller field, the class structure could still make the contest an important feature of the programme.
The meeting will conclude with the Sundowner Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 5) at 8:38pm, a race over 2m 1f 61y with £9,850 in prize money for horses aged 5YO and above. A field of seven runners is expected, with Ghasham, Cuzco du Mathan, Starman, Clean Getaway, Prospect House and Zumbi among the names entered. The closing event will complete the evening’s six-race schedule.
Cartmel Race Cards 27 May will feature six evening contests including maiden hurdles, staying events and steeple chase races, with prize funds rising to £12,850 across the programme.
