Bank Holiday racing at Cartmel Racecourse on Monday, 25 May produced an entertaining afternoon of jumps action, with standout performances from jockeys Sean Quinlan and Sean Bowen, while several competitive handicap contests kept racegoers engaged throughout the seven-race card.

The picturesque Cumbrian venue once again delivered its trademark mix of stamina, drama and strong finishes as horses battled across hurdles and fences in front of a lively holiday crowd.

The opening race, the Hadwins Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle over 2m1f, saw Mighty Fleur produce an impressive display under champion jockey Sean Bowen. The mare travelled smoothly throughout the Class 4 contest before quickening clear approaching the closing stages. Bowen timed his challenge perfectly as Mighty Fleur showed both pace and composure to secure victory in convincing fashion, giving connections an encouraging success in the GBB-backed event.

The opening division of the Johnny & Tony Connell Memorial Handicap Hurdle over 2m6f provided a competitive staying contest, with Evenwood Sonofagun rewarding a determined ride from Sean Quinlan. The Irish-bred runner stayed on strongly in the latter stages after being positioned prominently throughout. Quinlan kept his mount balanced around Cartmel’s tight turns before asking for maximum effort after the final hurdle, where the gelding responded gamely to score in the Class 5 event.

The second division of the same race went the way of French-bred Path of Stars, who delivered a memorable performance under Benjamin Macey. The winner showed excellent stamina in testing the field over the extended trip and battled bravely in the closing stages. Macey judged the pace effectively and kept his mount in contention throughout before asserting late on the run to the line to register an important victory for connections.

One of the feature contests of the afternoon came in the RF Miller & Co Handicap Hurdle, a competitive Class 2 race over more than three miles. The race produced a quality staying performance from Tranquil Sea, expertly partnered by Harry Skelton. The Irish-bred runner travelled strongly throughout the contest and showed plenty of stamina in the closing stages. Skelton remained patient before delivering a decisive challenge after the final hurdle, with Tranquil Sea staying on powerfully to claim the feature hurdle prize of the day.

The crowd then witnessed a demanding stamina test in the Hugh Cavendish Veterans’ Handicap Steeple Chase over an extended 3m5f. Veteran chaser Stratagem rolled back the years with a courageous success under amateur rider Mr James Murray. In one of the most gruelling races on the card, the experienced French-bred gelding jumped consistently and kept finding more under pressure. Murray produced a confident ride, preserving enough energy for the long run-in as Stratagem outstayed rivals in a performance that drew warm applause from the spectators.

Speed and accurate jumping came to the forefront in the Molson Coors Handicap Steeple Chase over 2m1f, where Coup de Coeur emerged victorious under Conor O’Farrell. The winner travelled fluently throughout the race and produced several slick jumps at crucial moments. O’Farrell asked for an effort turning for home and the gelding responded strongly, pulling clear after the final fence to land the Class 3 contest in good style.

The concluding race of the afternoon, the Warrior Down Handicap Steeple Chase over 2m5f, completed a memorable day for Sean Quinlan as Sean Og secured victory in determined fashion. The pair combined effectively in the closing stages after a tightly contested battle around the demanding Cartmel circuit. Sean Og showed admirable resilience after the final fence and held off challengers on the run to the post, giving Quinlan a second winner of the day and ending the meeting on a high note.

Monday’s meeting once again highlighted why Cartmel remains one of the most unique and popular stops in the British jumps calendar. Known for its tight layout, extended run-in and festive atmosphere, the racecourse attracted strong support from racing enthusiasts enjoying the Bank Holiday fixture.

Sean Bowen and Sean Quinlan emerged among the standout riders on the card with multiple victories, while trainers and owners were rewarded with several determined staying performances across both hurdles and chase contests.

From the promising display of Mighty Fleur in the opener to the battling success of Sean Og in the finale, the afternoon provided racegoers with a memorable showcase of National Hunt racing in the heart of Cumbria.
