Rob Hornby Secures Double During Windsor’s Monday Evening Meeting

A competitive evening of flat racing unfolded across multiple divisions as Windsor Racecourse staged a seven-race programme on Monday, 25 May. The card combined maiden contests, sprint events and handicap races across varied distances, while a number of leading trainers and jockeys recorded significant performances through the course of the meeting. Rob Hornby emerged among the most notable figures on the evening after registering multiple winning rides, while Roger Varian also added his name to the winners list during the later stages of the programme.

Opening the evening programme, the Handicap Stakes (Class 5) produced a successful outcome for Mrembo, who delivered victory for trainer Jonathan Portman under Rob Hornby’s guidance while carrying the colours of RWH Partnership. The staying contest was completed in 2m 29.10s, with Seventy finishing second and Opera Wave taking third place.

Attention then shifted towards the maiden division, where Paradise Walk secured victory in the Track Radio on Digital & DAB Maiden Stakes (Class 4) (GBB Race). Trained by Ralph Beckett and partnered by Hector Crouch for owners Valmont & New Chelsea, the winner crossed the line in 1m 11.71s. Space Party followed home in second position, while Trinculo completed the leading trio.

The focus later moved towards another developing contest on the programme, with Mythical Valentine claiming success in the Telephone & Text Maiden Stakes (Class 3) (GBB/GBBPLUS Race). Under Callum Hutchinson for trainer Andrew Balding and owners Mick and Janice Mariscotti, the winner completed the distance in 2m 28.63s. Treble Nine secured second place and Aukus completed the placings.

Speed assumed greater importance during the middle stages of the card, where Justcallmepete emerged strongest in the Sprint Series Handicap Stakes (Class 2). Guided by Myla Coppins for trainer Tony Carroll and owners Peter Clarke Racing Partners, the winner recorded 1 11.05s, finishing ahead of Uncle Don, while Sudden Flight occupied third position.

As the evening programme progressed further, Rob Hornby returned to the winner’s enclosure aboard Serengeti in the Handicap Stakes (Class 3) (GBBPLUS Race). Trained by Mike Murphy for owner Jim Gill, the winner covered the distance in 2m 07.09s, with Merveilleux Lapin finishing second and Auld Toon Loon claiming third.

One of the later contests on the schedule produced another notable result, with Antipodes landing the Barbara and Ken’s Diamond Wedding Anniversary Handicap Stakes (Class 3). Trained by Roger Varian and ridden by Ray Dawson for Highclere Thoroughbred Racing – Eagle, the winner crossed the line in 1m 39.41s. Asmen Warrior followed in second place, while Newfangled completed the first three.

Bringing the Windsor programme to its conclusion, the Happy Birthday Sveta Handicap Stakes (Class 6) concluded with Buckland Belle securing victory for trainer Ollie Sangster and jockey Edward Greatrex. Representing Mr P McNally and Partners, the winner completed the race in 1m 41.77s, while Mertoun finished second and Fans Favourite occupied third place.

The seven-race card produced a broad spread of winning performances across maiden and handicap company. Rob Hornby’s pair of victories and Roger Varian’s later success added additional significance to a meeting that delivered competitive racing throughout the evening programme.
