A powerful late rally from Glen Hill Farm’s homebred Unwritten Rule denied front-runner Monster in the closing strides of Sunday’s $100,000 Roar Stakes at Gulfstream Park, where wet weather forced the sprint from turf to Tapeta.
Unwritten Rule Roar Stakes victory.
The lightly-raced three-year-old, a son of Justify, continued his steady rise with a determined performance under jockey Edwin Gonzalez, who secured his third winner of the afternoon. Trained with patience after just three previous starts, Unwritten Rule now owns two victories and two runner-up finishes from four career appearances.
The Roar Stakes unfolded at a relentless tempo after General Bradley briefly showed speed leaving the gate before Arindel’s homebred Monster quickly surged clear. Guided by jockey Samy Camacho, Monster tore through an opening quarter-mile in :20.97 and reached the half-mile mark in :43.58 while opening up a commanding advantage around the turn.
However, Gonzalez angled Unwritten Rule away from the inside entering the straight and gradually cut into the leader’s advantage. With strong momentum in the final furlong, Unwritten Rule swept past in the final few strides to claim the Roar Stakes in a sharp time of :56.51 over five furlongs.
The Roar Stakes had originally been scheduled for turf before overnight and morning rain altered conditions at Gulfstream Park, prompting officials to move the contest to the Tapeta surface.
Unwritten Rule’s performance continued a productive campaign that began earlier this winter at Tampa Bay Downs. Out of the Curlin mare Jewish Guilt, the colt won on debut before finishing second in his next outing. He was most recently disqualified from first place and officially placed second in an allowance optional claimer on April 11.
Sunday’s success provided compensation for that earlier setback and further advertised the potential of the improving colt, whose pedigree combines stamina and class through both Justify and Curlin.
Away from the track, Gulfstream Park is preparing for the return of its popular Taste at the Track series on Saturday, May 23, with the Martinis, Paninis and Linguine event scheduled inside the Flamingo Room overlooking live racing. Guests will be offered a wide selection of Italian-inspired dishes alongside beverages during the evening gathering.
The manner of Unwritten Rule’s success suggested there may be considerably more to come from the improving three-year-old as the season develops. Despite facing an experienced pace scenario and adapting to a late surface change, the colt showed maturity beyond his limited race experience. His ability to settle comfortably behind the leaders before producing a sustained finishing effort through the stretch reflected both tactical versatility and natural athleticism.
Connections will also have been encouraged by the professionalism he displayed when switched into the clear entering the straight, where he responded willingly under pressure to reel in the long-time leader. With only four career starts to his name, Unwritten Rule still appears to be learning his craft, yet he has already demonstrated the consistency and determination associated with progressive young sprinters.
Sunday’s performance at Gulfstream Park not only provided another important stakes success for Glen Hill Farm, but also hinted that the son of Justify could continue climbing the ranks in the coming months if he maintains this rate of improvement.
Trainer and connections are likely to assess future opportunities carefully following this breakthrough stakes success, particularly with the colt continuing to progress steadily with racing experience. The adaptability Unwritten Rule displayed on Sunday could open the door to a variety of sprint assignments later in the summer, including further appearances at stakes level.
