Preakness Stakes Field Finalised With Taj Mahal Among Leading Names

Preakness Stakes 2026 insights as Unbeaten colt Taj Mahal trains at Laurel Park

The spotlight at Laurel Park on Saturday will fall on unbeaten colt Taj Mahal, whose rise through the spring ranks now brings him to the most demanding assignment of his young career in the 151st running of the Preakness Stakes. Drawn on the rail in a capacity field of 14, the Brittany Russell-trained runner enters the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown with momentum, local experience and growing expectations.

For Russell and jockey Sheldon Russell, the race may hinge less on raw ability than on how smoothly Taj Mahal leaves the gate and settles into position during the opening stages of the 1 3/16-mile contest.

“We anticipate he’s going to be forward as long as he breaks good,” Brittany Russell said this week. “We don’t have to be on the front end. We want Taj to be comfortable.”

The son of Nyquist has won all three starts in increasingly authoritative fashion. After overcoming a slow beginning to score on debut in February, Taj Mahal captured the Miracle Wood Stakes before producing an emphatic 8¼-length victory in the Federico Tesio Stakes at Laurel Park last month. His familiarity with the Maryland surface could prove significant in a race where several rivals are encountering the track for the first time.

Unlike most of the field, Taj Mahal has remained in his own barn rather than relocating to the Preakness Stakes stable area, maintaining the same routine that has carried him through an unbeaten campaign. Sheldon Russell, aboard for every career start, knows the colt’s natural speed is his greatest weapon but also understands the importance of restraint in a field packed with pace.

Brittany Russell said the colt has learned to settle more effectively in recent workouts, adding that his final preparations had been deliberately measured rather than demanding.

Taj Mahal shares co-third favouritism on the morning line at 5-1 alongside Incredibolt and Chip Honcho, while Iron Honor heads the market at 9-2.

The Chad Brown-trained Iron Honor arrives with only three career starts, mirroring the profile of Brown’s previous Preakness winners Cloud Computing and Early Voting. The Gotham Stakes winner disappointed when seventh in the Wood Memorial but connections believe removing blinkers and a series of strong workouts have sharpened the colt considerably.

Brown said the Wood Memorial gave Iron Honor valuable experience despite the result and expressed confidence the colt possesses enough foundation for the Classic assignment. Flavien Prat takes the mount for the first time.

Among the more intriguing runners is Incredibolt, whose participation materialised only days before entries closed. Trainer Riley Mott admitted the decision came together almost spontaneously after the colt exited the Kentucky Derby in strong condition following a respectable sixth-place finish.

The son of Bolt d’Oro is expected to adopt a stalking position behind what appears likely to be an aggressive early pace. Jaime Torres retains the ride after partnering the colt in all six starts.

Napoleon Solo also brings unanswered questions into the race. Brilliant as a juvenile when capturing the Champagne Stakes, the Chad Summers-trained gray has yet to reproduce that form around two turns this season. Summers, however, believes the colt has returned to his best following a carefully managed preparation.

“He’s back to the old Napoleon,” Summers said Friday morning.

Ocelli may attract considerable support after finishing strongly for third in the Kentucky Derby despite covering extra ground from a difficult outside draw. Trainer Whit Beckman believes Saturday’s inside post can allow the closer to save ground before producing a late challenge under Tyler Gaffalione.

Steve Asmussen’s Chip Honcho skipped the Kentucky Derby specifically with the Preakness in mind, although the Hall of Fame trainer voiced concern over Laurel Park’s deeper racing surface. The Gun Runner Stakes winner has trained steadily into the race and remains among the leading contenders despite his Louisiana Derby defeat.

Talkin, trained by Danny Gargan, arrives with graded form and the assistance of Irad Ortiz Jr. Gargan described the colt as a developing horse whose best days may still lie ahead, though he acknowledged a placing in Saturday’s race would represent a major achievement for the ownership group.

The field also includes Pretty Boy Miah, Bull by the Horns, The Hell We Did, Great White, Crupper, Corona de Oro and Robusta, ensuring a competitive and tactically complex renewal of the Preakness Stakes 2026.

Several runners possess early speed, increasing the likelihood of a demanding tempo through the opening half-mile. That scenario could favour closers such as Ocelli, though Taj Mahal’s tactical versatility and proven affinity for Laurel Park may prove decisive if he secures a clean beginning from the inside draw.

Saturday’s race is scheduled for a 7:01 p.m. local start and headlines a busy weekend card featuring multiple graded stakes contests across Black-Eyed Susan Day and Preakness Day.

For Brittany Russell, already enjoying a breakthrough season on the national stage, victory in the Preakness would represent another landmark achievement — and confirm Taj Mahal as one of the leading three-year-olds in American racing.
