Midweek metropolitan racing will return to Sydney on Wednesday, 13 May, as the Kensington circuit at Royal Randwick stages an eight-race programme under the banner of the Kensington Midweek meeting at Australian Turf Club. The card will combine juvenile contests, sprint handicaps and middle-distance races across distances ranging from 1250m to 1800m, with more than $520,000 in total prize money scheduled to be distributed during the afternoon fixture.
The Kensington track has regularly produced tightly contested midweek racing in Sydney, and Wednesday’s programme will again bring together a blend of developing younger horses and experienced metropolitan performers. Several races have drawn evenly matched fields, particularly across the sprint and staying events in the latter half of the afternoon.
The afternoon will begin with the HAWAII FIVE OH @ VINERY STUD HANDICAP at 12.15 PM, a 1400m contest for two-year-olds carrying prize money of $60,000. Nations League is expected to take his place alongside Unhinged and The Underquoter in the juvenile opener, while Tron Bolt, Rolling Home, Your Attitude and Jessenya will also feature among the early runners. With a moderate-sized field and several lightly raced juveniles engaged, the opening race will likely provide an early guide to emerging form at the Sydney midweek level.
Momentum will quickly build into the TAB PLATE at 12.50 PM, where three-year-olds and older horses will compete over 1400m for a purse of $100,000, the richest race on the programme. Adenauer and Cellphone are among the more established names entered for the event, while Cool Rupert, Hard Shell, Mehsun and Nuclear Pete are also expected to line up. The combination of experienced older runners and progressive performers should create one of the more competitive contests on the card, particularly over the testing Kensington 1400m journey.
Attention will then turn to the KIA CENTRAL REGION DEALER OF THE YEAR HANDICAP at 1.25 PM, a 1300m event for three-year-olds worth $60,000. Ernaux is expected to meet fellow three-year-olds I Am Carrot and Siragusa in what appears a balanced field on paper, while Cheeky Smirk, Sapphire Rose and Three Arrows add further depth to the race. The shorter trip and smaller field could place additional emphasis on race tempo and positioning around the Kensington circuit.
The middle stages of the programme will centre around the KIA SOUTHERN REGION DEALER OF THE YEAR HANDICAP at 2.00 PM over 1800m for three-year-olds and older runners. Offering another $60,000 purse, the staying contest will include Oso Spirited, War Ribbon and Nasebah alongside The Big Blue, Allapercanto and Morning Sun. The 1800m trip around the Kensington layout often places importance on stamina and tactical riding, and this race will likely become one of the afternoon’s more tactical affairs.
Staying performers will again come into focus in the KIA WESTERN REGION DEALER OF THE YEAR HANDICAP at 2.35 PM, another 1800m event for three-year-olds and older horses with $60,000 in prize money available. Affermato and Stay Tuned are among the expected runners, while Midnight Luna, Cash Me, That A Boy and Stellar Rhonda will strengthen the field. With several runners bringing solid middle-distance credentials into the race, the contest could develop into one of the stronger form references from the meeting.
Speed will become the defining factor in the KIA NORTHERN REGION DEALER OF THE YEAR HANDICAP at 3.10 PM, a 1250m sprint for horses aged five years and older carrying a purse of $60,000. Mafia, High Blue Sea and The Extreme Cat are expected to attract attention in the sprint assignment, while Forecaster, Crop Duster and Ningaloo Star complete the line-up. The shorter distance and experienced field should ensure a genuinely run sprint with little margin for error around the turn.
The late-afternoon programme will continue with the KIA EASTERN REGION DEALER OF THE YEAR HANDICAP at 3.45 PM over 1250m for four-year-olds and older horses. Another $60,000 will be on offer as Super Nui, Mamushka and Let’s Fly prepare to meet Thames, Cavity Bay and Invisible Magic in a competitive sprint field. Several runners in this race have displayed consistency at metropolitan level, and the event could become one of the more closely matched races on the schedule.
The curtain will come down on the Kensington Midweek fixture with the KIA NATIONAL DEALER OF THE YEAR HANDICAP at 4.20 PM over 1400m for three-year-olds and older horses. The final race of the afternoon will also offer prize money of $60,000 and is expected to feature Cellarmaster, Hurstville Zagreb and Pier Pressure among the leading runners. Emirate, Nana’s Wish, Theblade and Crossbow will complete the closing line-up in a race likely to attract strong interest late in the meeting.
Wednesday’s programme will continue Royal Randwick’s busy metropolitan racing calendar and will again showcase the depth of Sydney’s midweek racing ranks. With a balanced mixture of developing younger horses, experienced campaigners and several competitive handicaps across the afternoon, the Kensington circuit is expected to provide another strong day of metropolitan racing action.
