Newmarket Racecourse staged a compelling start to its Guineas Festival on Friday, where Santorini Star confirmed her growing stature with a decisive victory in the ÂŁ165,000 Jockey Club Stakes over a mile and a half.

Sent off the 9-4 favourite, the five-year-old mare justified strong support with a performance that blended patience and authority. Racing in the colours of Tony Bloom and partnered by Tom Marquand, she was settled neatly in second behind the early leader Eydon before asserting her challenge two furlongs from home. Once in front, she lengthened clear to score by a length and a quarter, never appearing in danger as the line approached.

Trained by William Haggas, the daughter of Golden Horn continues to build on a progressive profile that now points firmly towards the top level. A potential supplementary entry for the Coronation Cup at Epsom is under active consideration, with connections keen to test her against elite company.

Haggas, reflecting on the performance, was both pleased and rueful. He noted the mare’s genuine attitude and affinity for the ground, while admitting some frustration at not having already secured an entry for the Epsom showpiece. He emphasised her pedigree, pointing out that she comes from a family known to improve with age, suggesting there may be further progression to come this season.

He also highlighted her versatility, explaining that while she may not naturally force the pace, she possesses a determined mindset that allows her to adapt tactically — a trait he regards as increasingly rare. Last season’s strong Group One form over extended distances adds further encouragement that she belongs at a higher level.

The Jockey Club Stakes Newmarket result may yet prove a stepping stone to bigger honours, with the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot also mentioned as an alternative route should connections opt against an immediate Group One assignment.

Earlier on the card, Haggas and Marquand had already opened their account with Earth Shot, and the pair completed a notable treble when Saber Strike produced a strong late surge to land the Listed King Charles II Stakes over seven furlongs.

The three-year-old colt, by Night Of Thunder, quickened impressively inside the final furlong to defeat Cerro Blanco by a length and a quarter, underlining his potential as a developing performer. Haggas indicated that the colt remains a work in progress, with ongoing discussions regarding his optimal distance. While some within the ownership team favour a mile, the trainer suggested that seven furlongs currently appears ideal, with the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot emerging as a likely next target.

Taken together, the afternoon belonged emphatically to Haggas and Marquand, whose trio of victories added depth and momentum to the opening day of the festival. Yet it was Santorini Star who provided the headline act — a mare on the rise, now knocking firmly on the door of racing’s highest tier.
