Trainer Kevin Attard will saddle a strong two-pronged challenge in Saturday’s $150,000 Whimsical Stakes (G3) at Woodbine Racetrack, sending out the progressive American Women alongside the battle-hardened Lithe Spirit in the six-furlong contest for fillies and mares.

American Women arrives at her first graded assignment in peak form, having strung together two authoritative victories that underline both her versatility and upward trajectory. The four-year-old daughter of Constitution showcased a devastating turn of foot when surging through a gap to score over the Woodbine main track last November, before adopting front-running tactics to dominate by 4Âľ lengths at Gulfstream Park in March.

Attard, Canada’s champion trainer of 2024, spoke warmly of the filly’s adaptability. He noted how she had displayed contrasting running styles in her recent wins, a quality that often proves decisive at the highest level. With a win and a second from two prior appearances over Woodbine’s main surface, expectations are quietly building that she could secure a breakthrough stakes success.

Bred in Kentucky by Breffni Farms, American Women has already gained experience at notable circuits including Churchill Downs and Keeneland Race Course, and her return to Toronto has reportedly been seamless following a winter campaign in Florida.

Stablemate Lithe Spirit brings a contrasting profile but equally compelling credentials. The five-year-old mare, a daughter of Speightstown, arrives on the back of a determined victory in the Queen Stakes at Turfway Park, where she showed grit and resolution to prevail in a tightly contested finish.

Previously trained by Steve Asmussen, Lithe Spirit has developed a reputation for her powerful late surge, reeling off a sequence of wins across late 2024 and early 2025 that included stakes and allowance successes. Her ability to quicken sharply and sustain that effort marks her as a serious contender in a race that often rewards tactical speed combined with finishing strength.

Her earlier outings at Woodbine yielded mixed results, including a sixth-place finish in the Hendrie Stakes (G3), but her current form suggests a mare operating with renewed confidence. With accomplished rider Rafael Hernandez set to take the reins, connections will be hopeful she can translate her recent consistency to the Toronto stage.

Both Attard runners have prepared with purpose over the Woodbine surface. American Women clocked a pair of sharp half-mile breezes in :48.20, while Lithe Spirit followed with steady and progressive works, indicating readiness for the assignment ahead.

The Whimsical Stakes, a longstanding sprint fixture, has historically attracted competitive fields, and this year’s renewal appears no exception. Among the rivals lining up are the Mark Casse-trained Ms. Bucchero and the consistent Maximum Fifty, ensuring a searching test for all involved.

As the weekend feature approaches, much will hinge on how the race unfolds tactically. If American Women can reproduce her recent authority, she may well announce herself at the graded level, while Lithe Spirit’s proven resilience ensures she will be closing strongly when it matters most.
