Newnham Back on Top After Key Midweek Success at Happy Valley

Mark Newnham at Happy Valley after reclaiming trainers championship lead

The Hong Kong trainers’ championship took another decisive turn at Happy Valley Racecourse  on Wednesday evening, as Mark Newnham surged back into the lead, edging ahead of Caspar Fownes to cap a remarkable run through April.

Newnham’s return to the summit follows a sequence of high-profile successes that have reshaped the standings in recent weeks. After saddling Invincible Ibis to victory in the BMW Hong Kong Derby in March, the Australian secured a landmark breakthrough at the top level when My Wish captured the FWD Champions Mile at Sha Tin on Sunday. That momentum carried seamlessly into midweek competition, where Armor Golden Eagle delivered a polished performance in the Class 3 Jeju Handicap under Zac Purton, lifting Newnham to 50 wins for the season.

With the championship finely poised, Newnham holds the advantage on countback over Fownes, having accumulated more second-place finishes. The contest remains tightly compressed, with Danny Shum on 49 wins, David Hayes advancing to 48 after a double, while Francis Lui and John Size continue to apply pressure from 43 and 41 victories respectively.

Purton, already a dominant figure in the saddle, enjoyed a standout evening with three winners, including Armor Golden Eagle, Honest Witness and Giant Ballon. The eight-time champion now stands within touching distance of a historic milestone, requiring just 14 more victories to become the first jockey to reach 2,000 wins in Hong Kong. His ride aboard Armor Golden Eagle, who surged clear by three and three-quarter lengths, also secured a lucrative bonus after a commanding display.

“It was a good night, they help, nice way to finish,” Purton remarked. “He drew the right gate, had the right run and was quite soft on the line. There’s more there.”

David Hayes, fresh from Group 1 success with Ka Ying Rising earlier in the week, maintained his challenge with a well-executed double. Dashing Maurison responded positively to the application of blinkers for the first time, justifying his trainer’s confidence with a determined victory in Class 5 company, while Honest Witness produced an emphatic performance later on the card.

“I really felt this horse, if he concentrated, would be too good for the horses in Class 5,” Hayes said. “If it rains later in the season, that could play into his strengths. There’s likely another win in him.”

Douglas Whyte emerged as the leading trainer on the night with a treble, courtesy of Find My Love, Gameplayer Elite and Giant Ballon, taking his seasonal tally to 20 wins. The former champion jockey turned trainer reflected on a particularly satisfying evening at a venue that has long held personal significance.

“We’ve only had five runners, three winners and a fourth. It’s been a great night,” Whyte said. “The Valley has always been special—vibrant, tactical, and unforgiving.”

Among the supporting performances, Cody Mo’s Super Goldendragon broke through for a first career victory with a resolute staying effort, while Another Zonda provided Matthew Chadwick with a welcome return to the winner’s circle after a determined front-running display. Luke Ferraris also reached a notable milestone, guiding Bottomuptogether to his 30th win of the campaign.

With the season entering its decisive phase, the Hong Kong trainers’ championship continues to evolve with each meeting, the balance of power shifting subtly but significantly. Attention now turns to Sha Tin on Sunday, where the Queen Mother Memorial Cup Handicap promises to add another chapter to an already compelling title race.
