Romantic Warrior further cemented his place among the modern greats with a commanding fourth victory in the Group 1 FWD QEII Cup at Sha Tin , delivering a performance of authority and poise under James McDonald.

Facing a strong international field of Group 1 winners, the Danny Shum-trained champion showed once more why he is regarded as one of the world’s elite middle-distance horses. The eight-year-old surged to his 14th Group 1 success, extending his remarkable career tally to 23 wins and five placings from 30 starts, while pushing his earnings to a world-record HK$271.46 million for owner Peter Lau.

The race unfolded at a measured tempo, with Numbers and Giovanni setting the early pace. Settled comfortably in fourth, Romantic Warrior travelled with his customary ease, always within striking distance. As the tempo lifted approaching the home turn, McDonald allowed his mount to lengthen stride, and the response was immediate.

Striding to the front at the 300-metre mark, Romantic Warrior quickly asserted his superiority. His decisive turn of foot — highlighted by a closing 400 metres in 21.91 seconds — left his rivals with little chance of response. He crossed the line a length clear of Masquerade Ball, with Sosie a further half-length back in third, stopping the clock at 2:00.64.

McDonald, who has partnered the champion in many of his finest victories, was unequivocal in his praise.

“It’s just an honour to be riding a horse like him,” he said. “He makes things happen which other horses don’t. Over this distance, he does everything right — he settles, relaxes, and then produces that incredible acceleration. He’s just bulletproof.”

The jockey admitted pre-race respect for the opposition, particularly Japanese contender Masquerade Ball, but was confident in his mount’s ability to rise to the occasion.

Trainer Danny Shum echoed those sentiments, highlighting the horse’s consistency and condition despite his advancing years.

“He’s been in great form all season, and this is his best distance,” Shum said. “He’s eight, but he races like a much younger horse. He’s a super champion.”

Purchased for HK$4.8 million at the 2021 Hong Kong International Sale, Romantic Warrior has now won 14 of his 15 starts over 2000 metres at Sha Tin. His record includes four Hong Kong Cup victories and a Hong Kong Derby, underlining a sustained period of dominance rarely seen at this level.

Attention now turns to the Group 1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup over 2400 metres next month, where Romantic Warrior will attempt to complete the Hong Kong Triple Crown. Having already secured the Stewards’ Cup and Hong Kong Gold Cup this season, success would bring an additional HK$10 million bonus and further enhance his legacy.

Shum remains cautiously optimistic about the challenge ahead.

“I will discuss it with the owner, but why not? He deserves the chance,” he said.

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on April 29.

This latest victory reinforces Romantic Warrior’s standing as a dominant force over 2000 metres globally. His ability to control races, conserve energy, and deliver a decisive finishing burst continues to set him apart. With the Triple Crown now within reach, the coming weeks could mark another historic chapter in an already extraordinary career
