A compact but intriguing field of five three-year-olds is set to line up for Sunday’s $125,000 Woodstock Stakes at Woodbine Racecourse , a six-furlong contest that has long served as an early-season marker for emerging talent on the Canadian racing calendar.
Run as a key stepping stone toward the King’s Plate in August, the Woodstock often offers the first meaningful glimpse of how a new crop might shape up over the summer months. This year’s edition may be smaller in numbers, but it carries no shortage of interest, led by the returning Silver Is Best.
Trained by Bill Tharrenos for owner Mike Coll, Silver Is Best arrives with a solid juvenile record behind him. His two-year-old campaign produced a notable highlight in the Bull Page Stakes, where he showed both speed and determination to secure a decisive 2¼-length victory. That effort was followed by a narrow second in the Frost King Stakes, underlining his consistency against stakes company.
Tharrenos has been encouraged by the colt’s development since those early runs. After wintering in Ontario, Silver Is Best has strengthened physically, with added muscle and a more polished action evident in recent morning exercises. His latest works suggest he returns sharper, posting a brisk four-furlong move in 47.60 seconds before stretching out to five furlongs in 1:00.80 the following week.
The trainer believes those efforts reflect a horse that has matured both mentally and physically. There is also a sense that Sunday’s assignment, while competitive, is a necessary step toward longer-term targets within the Ontario-sired programme later in the season.
Silver Is Best made his debut over 4½ furlongs last June, finishing third before quickly progressing to break his maiden in emphatic style over five furlongs. Though his campaign had its ups and downs, including a troubled run in the Clarendon Stakes, his overall record of two wins and two placed efforts from six starts demonstrates clear promise.
He will not have things his own way. Among the challengers is Arbiter, representing a powerful stable known for producing precocious runners, while Two Out Hero brings experience under jockey Rafael Hernandez. El Capo and Gnome complete the line-up, each capable of making an impact in a race where tactical positioning over the sprint trip will be crucial.
The Woodstock Stakes has a long and storied history dating back to 1885, with past winners often going on to make their mark later in the season. While Sunday’s race may not yet define the division, it will certainly begin to shape the conversation.
Post time is set for 1:20 p.m. at Woodbine, with the Woodstock Stakes positioned as one of the afternoon’s central attractions.
