The highlight of Sunday’s National Hunt action at Plumpton Racecourse comes at 3:27 PM with the Sussex Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle (Class 2)—the richest race on the card with a prize fund of £65,000.

Run over a demanding 3m 197y, the race has attracted a strong field of 11 runners, combining proven stayers with progressive contenders, setting up a compelling test of stamina and consistency.

Leading the weights is a Nicky Henderson-trained gelding (BHA 136, 12st), who brings experience but arrives with mixed recent form. Close behind in the ratings is Kamsinas (FR), trained by Fergal O’Brien and ridden by Jack Hogan, carrying 11st 13lbs off a mark of 135. Despite a recent fall, his earlier consistency keeps him in contention.

Sharing the same rating is Double Powerful (IRE) from the Neil Mulholland yard, partnered by Richie McLernon. While his recent form figures suggest inconsistency, his ability on a going day makes him a competitive runner.

One of the most progressive runners in the lineup is Roger Pol (IRE), trained by Jamie Snowden and ridden by Isabelle Ryder (5lb claim). With an impressive winning sequence (103311), he looks a major contender carrying 11st 8lbs off a rating of 130.

Among the mares, Bethpage (IRE) represents Emma Lavelle’s stable, with Harry Cobden in the saddle. Rated 129, she has shown consistent placed efforts and could be competitive over this trip.

Fountains Blenhein (GB), trained by Anthony Honeyball and ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies, enters the race in solid form (131P22). Off a mark of 128, he appears well-positioned to challenge if maintaining his recent level.

Another consistent performer is Turndlightsdownlow (IRE) from the Martin Keighley yard. With form figures reading 211222, Sean Bowen’s mount has been knocking on the door and looks set for another strong run.

Lower down the weights, Elysian Knight (GB) (Neil Mulholland) and Moveit Like Minnie (IRE), ridden by Nico de Boinville, add further depth to the field. The latter comes in after a recent win and could surprise off a rating of 119.

Top Guy (IRE), trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by Tristan Durrell, arrives in winning form (212021) and carries 10st 10lbs. His consistency makes him a serious contender despite being lower in the handicap.

Completing the field is Tranquil Sea (IRE), also from the Dan Skelton stable, who will need to improve on recent performances to feature prominently.

With a blend of in-form runners, seasoned campaigners, and emerging talent, the Sussex Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle promises to be a true stamina test and the standout contest of the Plumpton meeting.
