Topham Handicap Chase over the Grand National fences delivers a rising star moment
From the drop of the flag, Will The Wise travelled with purpose, measuring each of the iconic fences with growing confidence. Stone-Walsh was patient early, allowing the gelding to find his rhythm before gradually creeping into contention as the field swung past halfway.
The turning point came after the Canal Turn, where horse and rider found another gear. From there, the pair began to assert, and despite pressure late on, they stayed on strongly up the long run-in to secure victory by a length and a quarter over Ile Atlantique. Madara, representing Bryan Drew’s yard, ran on steadily to complete the frame in third.
For Stone-Walsh, the achievement carried added meaning given his journey through the ranks. Speaking after the race, he reflected on a lifelong ambition fulfilled at Aintree’s famous fences, crediting his early hunting and pony racing days as the foundation of his craft. He also looks ahead to a second big opportunity at the meeting, with a ride in the upcoming staying feature on the horizon.
Trainer Gavin Cromwell was full of praise for both horse and rider, highlighting the gelding’s straightforward nature and natural aptitude for jumping. He also suggested the progressive type could be suited to even longer distances in time, given his staying power and attitude.
Madara’s connections felt their runner may have been slightly below his peak on the day but still delivered a creditable effort after a strong preparation earlier in the season, noting the difficulty of replicating earlier form at such a demanding meeting.
The Topham Handicap Chase once again underlined its reputation as a stern test of accuracy, stamina, and nerve, with Will The Wise and Stone-Walsh combining to take full advantage when it mattered most.
