Delgado’s assistant, Gustavo Delgado Jr., struck a tone of cautious optimism. The race, he noted, carries both emotional and professional significance. It is, quite simply, home.

The Puma’s task will not be straightforward. Chief Wallabee, the 2-1 favourite, holds a prior victory over him from their meeting at Gulfstream in January. Yet, The Puma has progressed steadily since, learning with each outing.
Purchased for $150,000 at the OBS April Sale, the son of Essential Quality was always held in high regard by his connections. After a debut second and a below-par effort in the Sam F. Davis Stakes, he turned a corner with his breakthrough win in the Tampa Bay Derby.
Delgado Jr. emphasised patience in the colt’s development, pointing to his temperament as a key asset. The decision to delay his two-year-old debut now appears justified, with the foundation laid for bigger targets.
There are echoes, too, of stable star Mage—runner-up in this race before claiming the Kentucky Derby. Both horses share a similar running style, preferring to settle off the pace before producing a late surge. Both are lightly raced. And both, notably, possess the same composed demeanour.
Adding further intrigue, Hall of Fame rider Javier Castellano—who partnered Mage to Classic glory—takes the mount on The Puma.
Delgado’s previous Florida Derby seconds came with Majesto, Bodexpress and Mage, each of whom went on to play significant roles on the national stage. The pattern suggests that even near-misses in this race can signal future success. Still, the trainer would prefer to rewrite that narrative entirely.
Beyond the feature, Saturday’s card at Gulfstream is layered with compelling subplots. Wayne’s Law carries the heartfelt legacy of the late McFarland family, representing the enduring spirit of small breeders. In the Appleton Stakes, seasoned campaigner Spirit of St Louis returns, while Carson’s Run brings Grade 1-winning credentials into the contest.
Elsewhere, promising fillies make their presence felt in the Sanibel Island Stakes, and the Sand Springs and Army Mule Stakes add further depth to a programme rich in quality and variety.
