A seven-race National Hunt programme was completed at Southwell on Tuesday, 24 March, featuring a mix of steeplechases, hurdle contests and a bumper event. The meeting produced a series of measured performances across varying distances and classes, with several runners asserting themselves decisively in the closing stages overall.

The opening contest, the Ladies Day Sunday 16th August Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 4), was won by COPSHILL LAD in a well-judged performance. The winner was ridden with confidence by Paul O’Brien, trained by Harry Derham, and owned by Middleham Park Racing XLVII. SMURFETTE delivered a solid effort to finish second, ½ length behind, while ICAQUE DE L’ISLE stayed on to secure third place.

The Book Your Party at Southwell Racecourse Novices’ Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 5) was secured by SHADOWFAX OF ROHAN following a composed and assured round of jumping. Charlie Maggs partnered the Patrick Neville-trained runner to victory, with ownership held by K Jardine R Griffiths and W Duffus. KNOWN WARRIOR produced a credible performance in second, ¾ length behind, and CATCHIM completed the frame in third.

SCOTT’S LEGACY took the Southwell Open Maiden National Hunt Flat Race (Class 5) with a professional display. The winner was ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies, trained by Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies, and owned by The Forefold Racing Partnership. MUSIC SONG ran with credit to finish second, Neck behind, while L’AMALRIC shaped well to finish third.

RABY MERE claimed the Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 5) with a strong staying performance. Lewis Stones delivered a measured ride on the Caroline Fryer-trained runner, owned by C J Underwood and Caroline Fryer. PECKFORTON HILLS stayed on for second, 2 lengths behind, and REDEEMING LOVE secured third after a consistent effort.

The Easter Sunday Family Fun Day Novices’ Hurdle Race (Class 4) was won by HILLBERRY HILL in an emphatic and authoritative display. The gelding was ridden by Tom Bellamy, trained by Kim Bailey & Mat Nicholls, and owned by Mr J. Perriss. THE FLIER BEGLEY filled second place, 6½ lengths behind, while TOMBEREAU finished third after a respectable run.

CODETALKER landed the Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 4) with a determined and well-paced effort. Charlie Hammond guided the Stuart Edmunds-trained runner, owned by Edmunds Racing Club. HEARD THAT ran on to take second, 5½ lengths behind, with FINE CASTING completing the placings in third.

The concluding Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 5) was won by DARTMOUTH ROSE with a polished finishing effort. Jack Quinlan partnered the Matt Crawley-trained runner, who is owned by The Stablemates. CHER MONSIEUR secured second with a solid run, 3¾ lengths behind, while FINE AS WINE took third after staying on through the final stages.
