The Hong Kong Derby prize money has received a significant uplift, with the Hong Kong Jockey Club confirming a HK$4 million increase to the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, taking the overall purse to a record HK$56 million for the upcoming season. The move reinforces the Club’s continued push to reward ownership and sustain the strength of its elite racing programme.

Run annually as a proving ground for Hong Kong’s rising stars, the series has long been a launchpad for elite performers. Champions such as Golden Sixty, Romantic Warrior and Voyage Bubble have all built their reputations through these races, underlining the importance of the programme in shaping the city’s racing narrative.

Hong Kong Derby prizemoney increase lifts Classic races

Under the revised structure, both the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) and Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) will now carry HK$14 million each, up from HK$13 million. The centrepiece, however, remains the BMW Hong Kong Derby, which will offer a record HK$28 million when it celebrates its 150th renewal in 2027.

The most recent running of the Derby, staged on 22 March 2026, marked the conclusion of this season’s Classic Series. Over the years, the race has been claimed by standout performers including Viva Pataca, Ambitious Dragon, Designs On Rome, Golden Sixty, Romantic Warrior and Voyage Bubble, with Invincible Ibis emerging as the latest winner in 2026.

Andrew Harding, Executive Director of Racing at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said the increase reflects the Club’s intent to further support owners investing in young talent with ambitions of Derby success. He noted that the drive to win the Derby plays a central role in maintaining the high calibre of horses competing in Hong Kong each season.

Historically, only Rapper Dragon and Golden Sixty have managed to sweep all three legs of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, a rare feat that highlights the competitiveness of the programme.

Alongside the prizemoney rise, the Club has also introduced enhancements to its Premier Series for four-year-olds. Eligible runners will now have the opportunity to earn additional bonuses, with HK$500,000 awarded to winners, HK$300,000 for second place and HK$200,000 for third, on top of existing incentive schemes.

These initiatives work in tandem with the established Privately Purchased Horse (PP), Privately Purchased Griffin (PPG) and International Sale Griffin (ISG) bonus structures, all designed to reward early success and encourage continued investment in quality bloodstock.
