For Eustace, still in only his second season in the region, simply reaching this stage reflects a deliberate strategy — one centred on patience, placement, and identifying the right horses for the city’s most prestigious prize.
Dazzling Fit and Seraph Gabriel may not dominate the market on paper, but both enter the BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026 with profiles that hint at more than their ratings suggest. The former has yet to tackle the Derby distance, while the latter’s recent 12th-place finish over 2000 metres offers little immediate encouragement — yet context tells a more nuanced story.

This year’s BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026 has drawn attention for its depth rather than standout dominance, a factor that could play directly into the hands of emerging stables like Eustace’s. His belief that the Four-Year-Old Classic Series offers a realistic early breakthrough has underpinned his approach since arriving in Hong Kong ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Previously a co-champion trainer in Australia alongside Ciaron Maher, Eustace enjoyed elite-level success, including triumphs in the Melbourne Cup and the W.S. Cox Plate. Transitioning to Hong Kong, however, required recalibration.
Building a stable from the ground up in a new racing environment demanded patience — something the 34-year-old embraced with clarity of purpose.
“The Four-Year-Old Classic Series, for new trainers, is the bigger races during the season that you can hope to be a part of,” Eustace noted. “It was undoubtedly a target during the first season.”
That long-term vision began to take shape when Dazzling Fit delivered a striking performance in the Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m), finishing fifth at long odds under Luke Ferraris. The son of Ribchester, already a three-time winner, showed resilience and tactical speed — qualities that could prove valuable over Sunday’s testing trip.
Seraph Gabriel’s path has been less straightforward. His inclusion owes much to the selection panel, but his earlier form — notably a narrow runner-up finish over 1993 metres at Royal Ascot — suggests latent staying ability. With eight-time Hong Kong champion Zac Purton taking the reins, the gelding gains a significant edge in experience and racecraft.
Despite their modest ratings of 80 and 79, both runners carry quiet confidence into the contest. Their recent efforts, particularly Dazzling Fit’s Classic Cup run, have strengthened belief within the yard.
Eustace remains pragmatic. Not everything has gone perfectly through the campaign, but enough has fallen into place to bring both horses here in competitive condition. A favourable draw, announced earlier in the week, could yet tilt the balance further.
For Eustace, Sunday represents more than just participation. It is the culmination of a plan set in motion from day one — and a chance to announce his arrival at the highest level of Hong Kong racing.
“I think they’ll both be chances in what is a really wide-open race,” he said. “For us as a stable, it’s really exciting.”
