The spotlight falls firmly on the BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026 as owner Vincent To Wai Keung prepares for a long-awaited second shot at Classic glory this Sunday at Sha Tin Racecourse. Sixteen years after his first attempt fell short, To returns with renewed optimism, pinning his hopes on the progressive four-year-old Top Dragon.

To’s previous Derby runner, Grand Dragon, could only manage 12th in the 2010 renewal, but the mood in his camp is markedly different this time. With a HK$26 million prize on offer, the 2000m showpiece represents not just prestige but the culmination of years of careful ownership and planning.

Trained by Chris So, Top Dragon has built a reputation as one of the season’s most consistent performers among his age group. The son of Pierata arrives in peak condition, having finished a strong second in the Class 2 Year Of The Horse Cup Handicap over 1600m at his most recent outing.

A favourable inside draw has only added to the confidence within the camp.

“Of course, the draw alone won’t decide the Derby,” To reflected. “But as an owner, it’s already a joy just to have a runner in the race. The Derby really means a lot to me. Even after a decade in ownership, you’re never guaranteed a Derby horse.”

Top Dragon primed for BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026 challenge

To believes this year’s contender brings a stronger profile than his earlier representative. “Unlike with Grand Dragon, my runner won’t be dismissed as having no chance,” he said. “He’s an honest type, and with some luck, I believe he can put in a forward showing.”

The owner also acknowledged the strength of the opposition, identifying Little Paradise and Invincible Ibis as key rivals in what promises to be a competitive renewal of the BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026.

A passionate supporter of the sport, To has long invested in quality bloodstock. His past runners include Guy Dragon and Rich Dragon, both four-time winners who have contributed to his steady presence in Hong Kong racing circles.

Beyond the racetrack, the Derby carries a deeper personal significance. To has actively encouraged his family’s involvement in racing, making the occasion a shared experience.

“I asked my son Ronald to draw the barrier, and it was wonderful to see him pull gate one,” he said. “My family has also submitted our ballot application. We are all looking forward to Sunday’s meeting—it’s a special occasion for us.”

Sunday’s 10-race programme at Sha Tin begins at 1pm with the Class 4 Luger Handicap over 1600m. The BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026, the 149th running of the iconic race, is scheduled as Race 7 at 4:05pm, promising a compelling contest among the city’s best four-year-olds.
