A renewed philanthropic push from Breeders’ Cup Charities has delivered a significant boost to horse racing’s welfare and community programs, with more than $650,000 in donations confirmed following the initiative’s revitalisation in the latter half of 2025.
The charitable arm of Breeders’ Cup Limited revealed that the funds were generated through a strengthened programme designed to provide long-term support to key organisations within the Thoroughbred industry and wider community. Central to the initiative is the decision to direct all merchandise royalty revenue into the charity fund, creating a sustainable source of contributions in the years ahead.
The programme reflects a broader commitment to welfare, ensuring that funds raised are distributed across several core areas vital to the sport’s wellbeing.
Breeders’ Cup Charities Expands Support Across the Industry
Under the structure of Breeders’ Cup Charities, 100 percent of funds raised are directed toward five priority areas: equine aftercare, jockey health and wellness, backstretch and industry workers, equine research, and community outreach initiatives.
Among the principal beneficiaries are organisations that play a vital role in safeguarding both horses and the people who work with them. These include the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, which focuses on post-racing care for horses; the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, supporting riders who have suffered career-ending injuries; the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America, which assists stable staff and their families; and the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, a leading supporter of veterinary research.
Speaking about the initiative, Drew Fleming, President and Chief Executive Officer of Breeders’ Cup Limited, said the strengthened programme marked an important step toward sustained support for the industry.
“Following the successful launch of the new Breeders’ Cup Charities initiative in the second half of 2025, we remain committed to creating sustainable support for important causes across our industry and anticipate a significant increase in our giving going forward,” Fleming said. “Through Breeders’ Cup Charities, with the help of our partners, fans, and the racing community, we’re proud to stand behind impactful non-profits and their vital work.”
Additional fundraising efforts during 2025 helped drive the charitable total. These included an Annual Day of Giving, a “Champions Give Back” initiative conducted during the build-up to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, and a post-event online auction featuring Thoroughbred memorabilia and unique racing experiences.
Philanthropic support has also played a major role in strengthening the programme. Racing enthusiast and benefactor Ken Freirich pledged $500,000 to the initiative, a contribution that will be distributed over a three-and-a-half-year period. The donation was inspired by the revitalised structure of Breeders’ Cup Charities and is intended to encourage further long-term commitments from individuals across the racing community.
Industry leaders believe the expanded programme will help reinforce the culture of giving that has long been associated with the sport, ensuring that both equine and human participants receive meaningful support.
