Racing concluded at Cheltenham Racecourse on Tuesday, 10 March, where a competitive seven-race National Hunt programme was conducted featuring several top-level contests alongside established handicap events. The meeting produced a series of notable performances across hurdles and steeplechases, with leading trainers and jockeys securing important victories during the afternoon.
The opening Grade 1 event, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, was captured by Old Park Star, who delivered a composed performance under Nico de Boinville. Trained by Nicky Henderson for owners Gordon & Su Hall, the winner completed the distance in 3m 51.36s. Sober Glory finished second, while Mydaddypaddy secured third place.
Another Grade 1 contest on the programme, the Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Steeple Chase, was won by Kargese, partnered by Danny Mullins and trained by W. P. Mullins. Racing in the colours of Mr K. Alexander, the winner recorded 3m 52.35s, finishing ahead of Kopek des Bordes and Lulamba.
The Juvenile Handicap Hurdle produced another accomplished performance when Saratoga prevailed under Mark Walsh for trainer Padraig Roche. Running for owner Mr John P. McManus, the winner registered 3m 56.83s, with Winston Junior finishing second and Klycot third.
The Ultima Handicap Steeple Chase was secured by Johnnywho, who produced a determined staying performance under Richie McLernon for trainers Jonjo and A.J. O’Neill. Representing owner Mr John P. McManus, the winner completed the extended contest in 6m 21.48s, finishing ahead of Jagwar in second and Quebecois in third.
The principal hurdle of the meeting, the Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy, went to Lossiemouth, who travelled strongly throughout under P. Townend. Trained by W. P. Mullins for owner Mrs S. Ricci, the winner completed the distance in 3m 54.24s, finishing ahead of Brighterdaysahead and The New Lion.
Later on the card, the Plate Handicap Steeple Chase was won by Madara, ridden by Harry Skelton and trained by Dan Skelton for Bryan Drew and Friends. The winner recorded 5m 03.02s, with Will The Wise finishing second and Moon D’Orange third.
The concluding race, the National Hunt Challenge Cup Novices’ Handicap Steeple Chase, saw Holloway Queen produce a strong staying effort under James Bowen. Trained by Nicky Henderson for the Unique Financial Racing Partnership, the winner completed the demanding contest in 7m 47.13s, finishing ahead of King of Answers and One Big Bang.
