A lively Monday afternoon of National Hunt racing unfolded at Taunton Racecourse on March 9 as the Somerset venue hosted a competitive seven-race programme from 2:10pm through to 5:10pm. The meeting featured a blend of juvenile hurdles, competitive handicaps and steeple chases, with several decisive performances across the card. Riders and trainers made the most of favourable conditions as the races steadily built momentum toward the closing stages of the meeting.
The afternoon began with Race 1 at 2:10pm, The Roar Before Cheltenham Extra Places EBF Junior National Hunt Hurdle over two miles and 167 yards. Mecene (FR) delivered a composed effort under Ciaran Gethings to claim the Class 4 contest and set the tone for the day’s racing.
Race 2 at 2:40pm, The Roar Before Bog @ Cheltenham Maiden Hurdle over two miles and 167 yards, went the way of Way of Stars (IRE). Guided by Jack Tudor, the runner produced a strong performance to secure victory in the novices’ championship qualifier.
The 3:10pm contest, The Roar Before Cheltenham InfernoBoosts Handicap Hurdle over the same trip, saw Knight Templar come out on top. Sean Houlihan partnered the winner with confidence as the runner stayed on best to land the Class 4 handicap.
Race 4 at 3:40pm, The Roar Before Cheltenham DragonBoosts Handicap Steeple Chase over two miles, seven furlongs and 39 yards, produced a solid performance from Kap Vert (FR). Ridden by Sean Houlihan, the runner jumped fluently and finished strongly to claim the Class 3 chase.
The staying hurdle at 4:10pm, The Roar Before Cheltenham Welcome Offer Handicap Hurdle over three miles and 56 yards, was taken by Walkinthepresent (IRE). Dylan Johnston guided the runner with a well-judged ride to secure victory in the Class 5 contest.
Race 6 at 4:40pm, The Safer Gambling Tools No Roar Tonight Handicap Steeple Chase over two miles and 36 yards, went to Applicationofcash (IRE). Rian Corcoran produced a confident ride as the winner finished strongly to take the honours.
The finale at 5:10pm, The Roar Before Daily Faller Insurance Hands and Heels Handicap Hurdle over two miles, three furlongs and 64 yards, concluded the card with Taritino (IRE) emerging victorious. Henry Moore steered the winner home in the conditional and amateur riders’ contest, bringing an entertaining afternoon of racing at Taunton to a close.
