Emirates Super Saturday: Global Stars Assemble for Dubai World Cup Trials

Rebel’s Romance galloping ahead of Emirates Super Saturday at Meydan
By | 27 Feb 2026 | Mumbai

The road to the Dubai World Cup gathers real momentum this weekend as Emirates Super Saturday assembles an exceptional cast at Meydan, with Rebel’s Romance and Tuz leading a card rich in international depth and championship implications. Widely regarded as the definitive afternoon of trials ahead of next month’s showpiece, Emirates Super Saturday offers automatic berths into several of the biggest races on World Cup night.

Nine-time Group 1 winner Rebel’s Romance understandably commands top billing in the G2 Dubai City of Gold, where the prize is not merely prestige but guaranteed entry into the G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic. The globetrotting eight-year-old, who captured the Sheema Classic in 2024, returns to familiar surroundings after a gallant second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf in November.

“Rebel’s Romance returns to Dubai in great shape,” said trainer Charlie Appleby. “He is eight now, but you couldn’t knock his performances last season and he appears to have retained all his enthusiasm throughout the winter.”

Among his seven rivals is the progressive Fort George, who steps up to 2410 metres following his decisive victory in the G3 Dubai Millennium Stakes. Trainer Ed Walker has elected to meet the established star head-on rather than seek calmer waters.

“We thought not to run scared of one horse,” Walker remarked. “We’re very happy with Fort George. Everything has gone well since his win.”

Emirates Super Saturday: World Cup Hopes on the Line in Al Maktoum Classic

The G2 Al Maktoum Classic is another centrepiece of Emirates Super Saturday, offering direct qualification for the Dubai World Cup itself. A field of ten lines up, with Heart Of Honor seeking to build on his third-place finish behind Imperial Emperor in January’s Maktoum Challenge.

Trainer Jamie Osborne believes a return to 2000 metres will suit. “Almost certainly a pivotal race for us,” he said. “I believe he marginally underperformed last time and I’m looking forward to a sharper effort.”

Bhupat Seemar, whose Imperial Emperor skips this engagement, relies instead on Mendelssohn Bay, Killer Collect and Walk Of Stars. Mendelssohn Bay, impressive in the Firebreak Stakes, faces a wider draw but arrives in peak order. Killer Collect, meanwhile, returns swiftly after success in the Jebel Ali Stakes, with Tadhg O’Shea confident the quick turnaround will not hinder him.

The G2 Singspiel Stakes, a stepping stone to the Dubai Turf, features the Irish-trained Alakazi, who was third in the QEII at Ascot in October. Trainer Johnny Murtagh expects improvement for the outing, viewing this as an ideal launchpad for a month’s preparation toward World Cup night.

French raider Tumbler and seasoned campaigner King Gold add further intrigue, the latter now a nine-year-old but still described by connections as a “superstar” at home.

Tuz Returns to Defend Sprint Crown

If Rebel’s Romance brings star quality, Tuz delivers local legend status. The powerful sprinter, who swept the domestic Group sprints last season and landed the Dubai Golden Shaheen in 2024, begins his campaign in the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal.

“He’s like a catapult at the moment,” said O’Shea, who has partnered Tuz to six of his ten victories. “It’s just shy of 11 months since his last race, so there will be improvement to come, but he’s a legend around here.”

Stablemates World Record and Mufasa provide formidable opposition, while Cats By Five arrives chasing a hat-trick after two commanding handicap victories.

Elsewhere on Emirates Super Saturday, the G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint has drawn a full field of 16 for the straight 1200 metres, including French imports Monteille and Rayevka, alongside British-trained pair Two Tribes and Run Boy Run. Both have already tasted Carnival success and appear closely matched on ratings and recent form.

A berth in the G2 Godolphin Mile awaits the winner of the G3 Burj Nahaar, where Commissioner King, the 2023 Saudi Derby hero, heads the weights. O’Shea expects a bold showing from the imposing gelding, who thrives when allowed to stride forward prominently.

The evening concludes with the Listed Jumeirah 2000 Guineas, last year’s edition having produced subsequent Classic glory. Charlie Appleby saddles three, including exciting Kempton debut winner Talk Of New York, while the Jumeirah 1000 Guineas promises a compelling rematch between Taifuu and Fairy Oak.

With Purebred Arabians launching proceedings in the G1 Maktoum Challenge, the stage is impeccably set. Emirates Super Saturday has long been the proving ground for champions, and once again it offers a revealing glimpse of what may unfold on racing’s grandest desert stage.
