Mickael Barzalona continued his golden run in global racing by clinching the 2026 International Jockeys’ Challenge at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Friday, showcasing a mix of skill, composure, and tactical brilliance that has defined his decade-long career.
The French maestro, fresh off a glittering end to 2025 with Group 1 victories aboard Calandagan (IRE) in the Japan Cup and Daryz (FR) in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, added another feather to his cap. Competing against 14 top jockeys from around the world, Barzalona emerged victorious in a tightly contested four-race series that kept spectators on edge until the final heat.
Barzalona’s Double Secures Victory
The finale over 2100m on turf saw Barzalona expertly guide Year Of The Dragon (IRE) to victory, finishing ahead of Norway’s Frida Valle-Skar, whose runner-up performance aboard Kortez Bay (IRE) earned her second place overall. Britain’s Saffie Osborne rounded out the podium in third.
“It’s always great to be invited to these kinds of events,” Barzalona said. “You need a bit of luck, too. The way we ride here is different, especially on dirt, which makes the races very attractive. It’s always a pleasure to ride in Saudi Arabia.”
Valle-Skar, based in France, reflected on her performance: “I’m really happy. Twice second is enough to be proud. Adapting to the different style here was a challenge, especially riding on dirt for the first time in ten years, but it’s something I can take back to France.”
Early Rounds Showcase Global Talent
The competition kicked off with Osborne’s emphatic Round 1 win aboard Hay Nebaha (KSA) over 1600m on dirt. Tracking early leaders Hafedhk Allah (KSA) and Hollie Doyle, Osborne unleashed a late surge, finishing four and a half lengths clear of Saebout (KSA) and Valle-Skar. “She was very straightforward, a jockey’s dream,” Osborne remarked.
Round 2 saw Nina Baltromei, Germany’s trailblazing female jockey and first female German Derby winner, take victory aboard Abbeyah (KSA) in a thrilling 1400m turf contest. Abbeyah battled closely with Makthorh (KSA) and Muhammad Aldaham, ultimately edging out a half-length win. “It was really special. My horse fought every step,” Baltromei said.
Barzalona’s dominance was cemented in Round 3 over 1200m, where he rode Praetorian (IRE) from the inside gate to a commanding six-length lead in the home stretch, leaving Luis Morales and Medd’haa (USA) trailing.
A Celebration of International Jockeying Talent
The 2026 International Jockeys’ Challenge highlighted the depth of skill across the global jockey ranks, blending tactical intelligence with daring rides and thrilling finishes. For Barzalona, the event reinforced his status as one of the sport’s enduring talents, while Valle-Skar, Osborne, and Baltromei also carved memorable moments that will resonate in their careers.
