The Royal Delta (G3) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday has drawn a field rich in quality and intrigue, and Legion Racing’s Drexel Hill arrives with credentials that demand respect. The 4-year-old daughter of Bolt d’Oro, already Grade 1 stakes-placed, lines up in the $175,000 feature over 1 1/16 miles against Shred the Gnar and six other accomplished older fillies and mares on a competitive 12-race card.

Trainer Whitworth Beckman is under no illusions about the challenge ahead.

“I think she is where she needs to be. This is a really tough race on paper,” Beckman said. “Distance-wise, it might be on the short end of her spectrum, but hopefully she’ll get out there and have a good trip and make something of it.”

Drexel Hill stamped her quality early last season. After capturing the ungraded Busher at Aqueduct, she delivered a career-defining effort in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs. Dropping out to 13th early, she unleashed a sweeping rally to finish second at 32-1, beaten only by Good Cheer after circling the field six wide in the stretch.

“We knew she was going to run well,” Beckman recalled. “She was training well up to that spot. We loved the mile-and-an-eighth distance. Coming into the lane, I knew she was going to have to do a lot to get to the winner, but she put in a helluva effort to finish second that day.”

A minor setback after the Oaks forced a six-month break, but she returned with renewed purpose. Drexel Hill finished second in the Mother Goose (G2) at Aqueduct before securing the Wayward Lass at Tampa Bay Downs, where she raced closer to the tempo and proved tactically versatile.

That adaptability has become her hallmark.

“She’s a hard filly to predict,” Beckman said. “I’ve tried blinkers on, blinkers off. She’s been far back, she’s been closer. She always makes a move. It seems like there’s nothing she needs to have go her way for her to put in the effort.”

Hall of Famer Javier Castellano reunites with Drexel Hill for the Royal Delta (G3), adding further confidence to her bid.

Nothing Like You Adds Fresh Intrigue to Royal Delta (G3)

If Drexel Hill brings established Grade 1 form, Nothing Like You offers the promise of a new chapter. The 5-year-old mare, a multiple Grade 2 winner, makes her first start for trainer Brendan Walsh after being purchased for $700,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s November 2025 sale.

Previously trained in Southern California by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, the daughter of Malibu Moon compiled five wins and over $567,000 in earnings from 14 starts. Among her highlights were victories in the Santa Anita Oaks (G2) and Starlet (G2), underlining her class at two turns.

“She’s been good as gold and she’s got plenty of class,” Walsh said. “Once we got down here she came in well. There’s probably a little meat on the bone, too, but this looked the ideal spot to get her started.”

Her recent preparations at Palm Meadows have been encouraging, capped by a sharp half-mile breeze in 48.95 seconds. Drawn in Post 6 with Jorge Ruiz aboard, she faces a stiff test in her first outing since the Dark Mirage at Los Alamitos in September.

Shred the Gnar, a Grade 3 winner and narrowly denied a perfect four-for-four record, is expected to play a major role, ensuring the Royal Delta (G3) lives up to its billing as a searching midwinter examination for older mares.

Sprint Stars Eye Gulfstream Feature

While the Royal Delta (G3) commands centre stage, attention is also turning toward the $125,000 Gulfstream Park Sprint on Feb. 21.

Damon’s Mound, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, headlines nominations after capturing the Sunshine Sprint for a second consecutive year. The 6-year-old, a multiple graded-stakes winner, is closing in on the $1 million earnings mark and continues to thrive at six furlongs.

Among those likely to challenge are Great Navigator, a New Jersey-bred stakes winner with consistent sprint form, and Rolando, who boasts an enviable record at Gulfstream Park, including three victories over the surface.

With established performers and upwardly mobile contenders converging, the coming days promise compelling sport at one of America’s premier winter venues.
