Morrophore will return to familiar surroundings with Ryan Moore back in the saddle when she headlines the £110,000 Winter Oaks Lingfield Park at Lingfield on Saturday, January 17, carrying a penalty against nine rivals in the 1.15pm feature.
The John and Thady Gosden-trained mare arrives with confidence intact after producing a sweeping late run to land the recognised trial for this contest at the same venue in December. Moore, beginning his riding year in Britain, keeps the partnership intact as Morrophore attempts to follow a well-trodden path taken by recent winners who used that preparatory success as a springboard to Winter Oaks glory.
A 3lb rise has nudged her rating to 101, ensuring she concedes weight across the field, but recent history suggests that burden need not be decisive. Previous winners Al Agaila, Oh So Grand and Charlotte’s Web all arrived via the same route, underlining the strength of the form Morrophore now seeks to uphold.
Winter Oaks Lingfield Park contenders bring depth and intrigue
Chief among the dangers is Sky Safari, who steps up to 10 furlongs for the first time after showing a sharp turn of foot to win a Listed contest over a mile at Lingfield in November. James Fanshawe’s filly boasts a flawless five-from-five record on the all-weather, a sequence that includes a high-profile mile final at Kempton earlier in the autumn.
William Haggas sends lightly raced Wujjood, a filly whose raw ability has never been in doubt despite setbacks. Successful in a Pontefract novice last summer, the daughter of Sea The Stars pushed a subsequent Group 1 winner close at Newbury before finding conditions against her in later starts. Connections see this contest as a measuring stick, with black type the long-term aim should she rediscover her best.
Trial form is further represented by True Colors, trained by Marco Botti, who made much of the running before weakening late into fourth last time. Eve Johnson Houghton’s Lady Of Arabia arrives seeking a hat-trick following victories at Chelmsford and Wolverhampton, while Unassuming, trained by George Boughey, looks to build on her sixth-place finish in the race twelve months ago.
Charlie Hills’ Kimeko Glory drops back in trip after finishing runner-up twice at the track, and course winner Aiming High adds further interest. David Simcock’s mare is one of three set to compete from outside the handicap, joined by Thankyou Baroness and Bint Al Daar, both hoping stamina and resilience can offset their ratings.
With proven course form, emerging talent and established class converging, the Winter Oaks Lingfield Park once again shapes as a midwinter contest of depth, patience and tactical nuance rather than sheer speed alone.
