Flemington will settle into its familiar rhythm of expectation and anticipation on Saturday, January 10, as the Victoria Racing Club stages the VRC Standish Handicap Race Day, a ten-race program unfolding between 12:20pm and 5:55pm. As the summer racing season gathers momentum, this meeting will blend history, depth, and opportunity, delivering a card designed to test developing talent while spotlighting elite sprinting credentials.

At the heart of the afternoon sits the STANDISH HANDICAP, a Group 3 contest worth $200,000 that continues to hold a unique place on the Australian racing calendar. The race not only honours Captain Frederick Standish, whose vision helped shape the Melbourne Cup, but also serves as a proven launching pad toward the Group 1 Yulong Newmarket Handicap on 7 March, 2026. Year after year, the Standish rewards speed backed by composure, and this edition is expected to do the same

The day’s racing will begin promptly at 12:20pm with Race 1, TAB We’re On, a Benchmark 70 handicap for three-year-olds over 1600 metres. With eight runners competing for a healthy $150,000 purse, the opener will place an early emphasis on tactical awareness and race craft.

Stamina will come into sharper focus in Race 2 at 12:50pm, the HONOURING OUR JOCKEYS PLATE. Contested over 2000 metres, this Benchmark 78 handicap for horses three years old and upwards will feature 10 runners, offering a genuine staying test for a $130,000 reward.

Speed will take centre stage in Race 3, the JOCKEY CELEBRATION SPRINT at 1:25pm. Restricted to three-year-old fillies, the 1100-metre handicap will see 12 runners line up for $150,000 in a race likely to inject raw pace into the midsection of the card.

The card will then stretch out again with Race 4 at 2:00pm, the OFF THE TRACK TROPHY. Over 1800 metres, nine fillies and mares rated Benchmark 78 will chase $130,000, demanding balance, patience, and strong finishing effort.

The tempo will lift in Race 5 at 2:35pm, the NATIONAL JOCKEYS TRUST TROPHY. Covering 1600 metres, the Benchmark 70 handicap will host 12 runners chasing an $80,000 purse in a contest where timing the move will be decisive.

Sprint intensity will lift noticeably in Race 6 at 3:15pm, the JOCKEY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM SPRINT. Thirteen runners will surge down the 1000 metres in this $80,000 contest, sharpening the edge ahead of the feature races.

The build-up continues with Race 7 at 3:55pm, the HENRY BYRON MOORE HANDICAP. Run over 1600 metres, this Benchmark 84 event will host 11 runners competing for $130,000, serving as a key lead-in to the afternoon’s headline event.

Attention will then turn to the marquee Race 8, the STANDISH HANDICAP worth $200,000, scheduled for 4:35pm. With 11 runners contesting the Group 3 sprint over 1200 metres, the race will carry significant weight, both in prestige and in its genuine Group 1 implications for the autumn carnival. History suggests that those who excel here often belong at the highest level, and this edition is poised to reinforce that narrative.
Contenders: Maharba, Lim’s Kosciuszko, Aviatress, Aztec Ruler, Hedged, Disneck, Prairie Flower, Samangu, Major Share, Extratwo, Contemporary, Celsius Star

The meeting will wind down with two competitive sprints. Race 9 at 5:15pm, the VICTORIAN JOCKEYS ASSOCIATION TROPHY, will see 14 runners tackle 1200 metres for $130,000, before Race 10 at 5:55pm, the GEORGE WATSON HANDICAP, closes proceedings over 1400 metres with 13 runners chasing the same purse.

With depth across all grades and a feature race that continues to shape elite sprinting pathways, the VRC Standish Handicap Race Day stands as one of summer racing’s most purposeful fixtures, where every contest feeds the bigger picture. Expect electrifying action as Flemington Racecards 10 January are ready to deliver thrilling performances.
