Ben Pauling believes it would be “phenomenal” to register the most significant victory of his training career if The Jukebox Man can come out on top in what is shaping into a fiercely competitive edition of the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day, Friday 26 December.
The Naunton trainer enjoyed a memorable moment last season when the seven-year-old captured Grade One honours in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase over the same course and distance under Ben Jones. A setback later ruled him out of planned appearances at both Cheltenham and Aintree.
Owned by former Portsmouth, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United manager Harry Redknapp, the gelded son of Ask made a perfect return at Haydock Park last month, easing to victory in the Graduation Chase.
Speaking at a Jockey Club press event, Pauling said: “From a personal perspective, with Fact To File now in the mix, it only adds to the intrigue. If Willie brings over both Fact To File and Gaelic Warrior, it will be a proper spectacle. Then you have Jango Baie and our lad, who have looked impressive in novices but are yet to prove themselves fully at this grade.
“To be honest, we weren’t ready for Haydock, but he showed the enthusiasm and raw power that make him special. He’s in tremendous shape and has improved since last year. This would be the biggest career win for our team — a King George of this calibre would be extraordinary.”
Pauling believes Kempton Park is ideal for his charge to test himself against top staying chasers. “He’s rated 156, and I hope he’s better than that. Kempton suits him, and the faster the pace, the better he is. He’s versatile, can lead or settle, handles soft or quicker ground, and jumps efficiently. If we’re close turning in, the final fences should be exciting.”
The switch to fences has unlocked The Jukebox Man’s full potential. “He used to lug left over hurdles and was green, but fences have made him quicker. He hasn’t made a mistake in three chase starts. The only question is he hasn’t yet proven himself at this level.”
Much attention will fall on Redknapp, and Pauling praised his owner’s support: “He’s a fantastic man and a genuine gentleman. If I had to take one horse into a race like this, it would be him. My job is to keep him in top shape until the 26th.”
Redknapp added: “I’m thrilled to have a runner in the King George. He’s exceeded all expectations. It’s a tough race, but he looks in excellent condition. Winning at Cheltenham would be special, but a King George victory would be incredible.”
