The roar of the Ascot crowd on Champions Day was filled with celebration, pride, and a hint of emotion, as Oisin Murphy clinched the Champion Jockey title for the fifth time in a glittering British Flat season. For Murphy, it was more than just a tally of winners—it was a moment of personal triumph, earned through relentless dedication and unforgettable rides across the season.
Murphy, the Irish sensation, finished the championship with 143 winners, comfortably ahead of the talented Billy Loughnane on 108. His season was studded with memorable victories, including a sensational G1 double at York’s Ebor Festival aboard Asfoora in the Nunthorpe Stakes and Never So Brave in the City Of York Stakes.
“You always dream about winning it once, and it is great to pick it up again today,” Murphy reflected. “The weighing room is very competitive, with Group One-winning riders and plenty of young talent. It’s a difficult competition to win, and I am pleased to get it over the line.”
Meanwhile, the rising star Joe Leavy emerged as Champion Apprentice, securing 41 wins—four more than runner-up Jack Doughty. At just 20 years old, Leavy’s journey has been remarkable. After a near-miss last year and a life-changing injury at 16, he has shown extraordinary resilience. “The fall definitely made me value things a lot more. It only made me hungrier to get back,” he said, a reflection of his tenacity and unwavering focus.
In the owner ranks, Godolphin extended its extraordinary reign as Champion Owner, claiming the title for a 17th time with a haul exceeding £6 million in prize money. Their older stars shone brightly, with four-year-old Ombudsman dominating the 10-furlong division and seven-year-old Trawlerman taking staying honours. The stable’s promising juveniles, led by G1 Middle Park Stakes winner Wise Approach, signal that their dominance is far from over.
Hugh Anderson, Godolphin’s Managing Director, praised the team’s efforts: “It has been a remarkable season, with Classic doubles and outstanding performances across Royal Ascot. Every trainer and employee has contributed to this achievement. Our greatest thanks go to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, whose passion continues to inspire us all.”
