David Hayes’ eyes lit up as he watched Ka Ying Rising stretch out over the Canterbury track on Monday morning. The world-class sprinter, Hong Kong’s reigning Horse of the Year, powered through his final gallop ahead of the AU$20 million G1 The Everest at Royal Randwick this Saturday, leaving the champion’s connections brimming with optimism.

Hayes was keen to quash any doubts about Ka Ying Rising’s fitness after last week’s barrier trial at Randwick, which had seen him finish third over 1000m. “We’re really happy with him,” Hayes said. “He just went out on the beautiful Canterbury track this morning and ran home his last 600m in 38 seconds under a nice hold. His recovery was excellent.”

The gelding has clearly come on since the trial, regaining his last-start winning weight and showing the relaxed composure that has marked his career. Hayes dismissed rumors circulating online about fitness concerns, calling them “fake news” after a social media account was hacked, creating temporary confusion among fans.

“Ka Ying Rising has made the progression we thought he would,” Hayes added. “We’re expecting a bold showing. The firm track will only help.”

The trainer also revealed his hopes for a favorable barrier draw. “I think as close to the rail as possible would be best. He’s got incredible gate speed and the ability to take a sit, so he’s pretty foolproof. If the pace is fast, Zac (Purton) will sit third; if slow,F he will lead.”

With AU$7 million awaiting the winner, Ka Ying Rising is poised to make a bold statement in what has become the world’s richest turf race. Fans in Hong Kong and Australia will be watching closely as Hayes’ star prepares to light up Randwick this weekend.
