When Emma Berry takes over as Chair of the British European Breeders’ Fund (EBF) in January 2026, it will mark both continuity and change for one of the sport’s most influential sponsors. A respected bloodstock journalist, Pattern Committee member and hands-on owner-breeder, Berry succeeds Simon Sweeting after his decade of stewardship at the helm of the British EBF.

For Berry, whose career has spanned editorial desks and stud farms alike, the appointment carries both personal and professional weight. “It is an honour to succeed Simon Sweeting in this role,” she said. “The European Breeders’ Fund has been a long-running success story as racing’s original self-help scheme… it is now more vital than ever.”

A New Era for British EBF

The British EBF, funded by stallion owners, has become racing’s most active sponsor, contributing £2 million to prize money in 2024 alone. Since its inception in 1983, it has injected more than £42 million into British racing. Berry, who also serves on the BHA Flat Pattern Committee, now steps into a position that demands both financial oversight and a deep understanding of the industry’s shifting landscape.

Her predecessor leaves behind an impressive record. Sweeting, who manages Overbury Stud, has guided the British EBF through significant challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic when the fund still allocated ÂŁ1.4 million in prizemoney. He also oversaw the launch of the ÂŁ100,000 2yo Finals, which have become popular fixtures at Goodwood and York.

Board Changes for 2026

The handover coincides with a reshaping of the EBF’s board. New trustees include Chapel Stud’s stallion master Roisin Close, owner-breeder Colin Bryce, and TBA vice-chair Kate Sigsworth. They join at a time when British racing is under pressure to secure investment and maintain its competitive edge internationally.

Outgoing trustees Gary Middlebrook and Claire Sheppard received praise from Sweeting for their “valuable perspectives and skills,” reflecting the blend of experience that has long defined the EBF board.

A Steady Hand Through Transition

Berry’s background blends journalism and bloodstock. After serving as European editor of Thoroughbred Daily News and a decade as bloodstock editor of Thoroughbred Owner & Breeder, she brings an analytical perspective shaped by years covering both the triumphs and struggles of the sport. She is also a small-scale breeder herself, with two broodmares.

For Sweeting, the end of his term brings a moment of reflection. “It has been a privilege to represent British stallion owners… during my tenure, we have seen the launch of the British EBF £100,000 2yo Finals and the expansion of high-value development races.”

Looking Ahead

The British EBF’s role as a vital backer of prize money remains central to the health of the sport. Berry’s appointment signals continuity of vision, but also a fresh perspective as racing navigates uncertain times. With a track record of commitment and deep industry knowledge, her leadership is set to ensure the British EBF continues to be a cornerstone of British racing.
