There was a ripple of excitement among racing regulars yesterday when news broke that the Winter Derby would be making its way back to its traditional home at Lingfield Park in 2026. For many who have followed the race since its inception, the announcement felt less like a simple fixture adjustment and more like a homecoming.
Trainers and jockeys have long spoken fondly of Lingfield’s sweeping turns and long straight, a track that rewards both patience and precision. The roar of the crowd when the field turns for home, often audible above the television commentary, has always given the Group 3 contest a unique atmosphere. For those who remember the race’s glory years at Lingfield, the thought of its return is stirring plenty of nostalgic anticipation.
Fixture switch confirmed
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) confirmed it had approved a request from Arena Racing Company (ARC) to transfer Southwell’s fixture on Saturday, 21 February back to Lingfield Park. The meeting will feature both the Winter Derby (Group 3) and the Listed Hever Stakes.
It marks the conclusion of a two-year trial that saw Southwell host the prestigious card in 2024 and 2025, part of a winter fixture reshuffle. Though Southwell staged the races with professionalism and enthusiasm, Lingfield’s established identity as the natural home of the Winter Derby never quite loosened its grip on the sport’s collective imagination.
“A return to tradition”
Ben Cook, ARC’s Head of Group Racing – Fixtures and Funding, acknowledged the emotional pull of bringing the event back to Lingfield.
“The Winter Derby and Hever Stakes will return to Lingfield Park in 2026, following the end of the two-year trial of fixture moves throughout the winter season. These races have long been a highlight of the All-Weather Championships season at Lingfield Park, and we look forward to their return on 21 February, a fixture which is scheduled to feature on the ITV Racing broadcast.”
Cook’s words underline not only the logistical decision but also the recognition that Lingfield’s Winter Derby day has been central to the All-Weather Championships’ identity since their launch.
ITV Racing spotlight
The fixture’s return to Lingfield comes with added significance. Scheduled to feature on ITV Racing’s broadcast, the 2026 edition of the Winter Derby will once again enjoy a prominent showcase to a wider audience. That extra coverage ensures the roar of the Lingfield faithful will carry far beyond Surrey.
Significance
The Winter Derby, inaugurated in 1998, has been a cornerstone of the British All-Weather scene, offering a midwinter test for top-class middle-distance performers. Over the years it has produced memorable clashes, from Dubai World Cup-bound champions to domestic stars making their seasonal returns.
While Southwell’s surface and sharp turns added a different tactical dimension, there was always a sense among trainers and punters alike that the contest was only passing through. Lingfield’s return to the calendar feels less like change and more like restoration, cementing the track’s place as the winter showpiece venue.
For the Hever Stakes too, the switch will be warmly welcomed by sprinters’ connections who know Lingfield’s five furlongs can deliver a truer test of speed, with its demanding finish often catching out those who go too fast, too soon.
