Simcoe Sizzles Again with Gritty Vigil Stakes Triumph
The smile said it all. Trainer Katerina Vassilieva wrapped her arms around Simcoe after the dark bay gelding delivered another stirring performance, this time in Saturday’s Grade 3 Branded Cities Vigil Stakes at Woodbine. The crowd on the Toronto apron responded warmly, cheering as Rafael Hernandez guided the horse back to the winner’s circle.
Only four weeks earlier, Simcoe had dominated the Bold Venture Stakes in front-running style. On this occasion, however, he had to dig much deeper.
Simcoe holds off late challengers
Breaking a touch slowly, Hernandez hustled Simcoe into contention before taking a head advantage through a rapid opening quarter in :22.21. Victory Achieved had tried to steal the lead, but once Simcoe found his rhythm, he took control.
The gelding widened his margin to two lengths at the half in :44.21, with Twin City, Victory Achieved, and I’m A Gambler (IRE) giving chase. Turning for home, the threats came thick and fast. Horsepower split rivals and surged with intent, while Cruden Bay darted through along the rail.
But Hernandez never panicked. Sitting chilly until the final furlong, he asked his mount for more and Simcoe answered. The pair crossed the line 1 Âľ lengths clear in 1:21.19, with Horsepower second and Cruden Bay third. Twin City held fourth.
Confidence justified
“When the gates opened, he was laying back, and then he missed the break a little bit,” Hernandez admitted. “But I hustled to get in the lead, and you can see what he can do.”
For Vassilieva, it was the continuation of a dream summer. “He’s been training really well since his last race, just feeling like the man, full of confidence,” she said. “You always wonder if they’ll bounce after a big effort, but he proved today he’s still on top of his game.”
