A gentle cheer rippled across the Kingsclere stables as Andrew Balding shared a quiet smile, confident that Kalpana is poised to continue her winning ways. The Juddmonte-owned filly is set to return to Kempton Park this Saturday for the September Stakes, a key step on her journey toward the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Balding Eyes Back-to-Back Success
Last year, Kalpana thrilled spectators with a commanding victory in the September Stakes, and her trainer believes the four-year-old can replicate that form. “She won this race last year, so we know Kempton suits her perfectly,” said Balding.
This Saturday, the daughter of Study Of Man will tackle the mile-and-a-half Group Three contest, marking her first start outside of Group One company this season. The 13-strong field includes familiar rivals and promising newcomers, but Kalpana arrives as the standout contender after a series of solid performances this year.
Despite not yet claiming a victory in 2025, Kalpana has consistently impressed. She finished third in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and was runner-up in both the Pretty Polly Stakes and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes behind Calandagan, a horse regarded as one of Europe’s finest middle-distance performers.
A Vital Prep for the Arc
Balding is treating Saturday’s race as more than a contest — it’s a preparation for the autumn target in Paris.
“The King George took a bit more out of her than expected, so we opted for a local race before looking ahead to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe,” Balding explained.
“This is very much a stepping stone, and she has come back in great shape since Ascot.”
Kalpana’s 2024 campaign demonstrated her ability to peak at the right time, and her trainer hopes history repeats itself. “She improved with every race last year at this time, and we are hoping for the same progression again.”
The Contenders
While Kalpana is the headline act, she faces stiff competition from an international lineup. Notable entries include Giavellotto, Arabian Crown, and Tasmania, each bringing form and pedigree to the mile-and-a-half test.
September Stakes Entries (Selected):
-
Kalpana (Juddmonte / Andrew Balding / Colin Keane)
-
Giavellotto (Scuderia La Tesa / Marco Botti / Oisin Murphy)
-

The 2025 edition promises a competitive but thrilling contest.
