The Sandown crowd erupted as A Bit Of Spirit produced an extraordinary display of heart and determination to win the Solario Stakes 2025 in a breathtaking finish. Under a perfectly timed ride from Rossa Ryan, the colt overcame a troubled passage to snatch victory by the narrowest of margins, leaving trainer Clive Cox beaming with pride.
A Heart-Stopping Finish at Sandown
Owned by Paul and Clare Rooney and trained by Clive Cox, the talented son of Palace Pier delivered a performance full of courage and class in this Group Three contest over seven furlongs.
Sent off as the 2-1 favourite, A Bit Of Spirit travelled prominently for much of the race but looked in trouble when shuffled back to third approaching the final furlong. However, showing his trademark tenacity, Ryan found the smallest of gaps and asked his mount for one last effort.
The response was immediate. In a thrilling four-way battle to the line, A Bit Of Spirit lunged forward in the closing strides to edge out Humidity by a nose, while Oceans Drive, who had initially finished second, was demoted to third following a stewards’ inquiry.
“He is so tough,” said a delighted Clive Cox. “I thought we were beaten at one stage, but he dug so deep and fought back brilliantly. When they crossed the line, I wasn’t sure we’d done enough, but a few strides after, I thought he’d just edged it. He’s shown remarkable courage today.”
Trainer’s Delight and Future Targets
Cox, based in Lambourn, praised his colt’s fighting spirit and adaptability. “We weren’t sure how he’d handle these softer conditions, but he’s answered that question today,” he explained. “He’s maturing with every run and becoming battle-hardened, which is exactly what you want to see.”
He also paid tribute to the owners: “Paul and Clare have been wonderful supporters of the yard, and it’s a privilege to have a horse like this delivering on such a big stage.”
What’s Next for A Bit Of Spirit?
Following his impressive Solario Stakes success, A Bit Of Spirit now has multiple options for the rest of the season. He has been entered for both the Tattersalls Royal Lodge Stakes and the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, currently priced at 10-1 and 25-1 respectively.
However, Cox suggested that a trip to France for the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère at Longchamp in October could also be on the cards.
“He’s in the Royal Lodge, but we might prefer to keep him at seven furlongs,” Cox said. “The Lagardère is another option. Today gave us the confidence that he handles soft ground, which really opens up our plans. We’ll sit down and decide, but for now, I’m just thrilled with what he’s achieved.”
With his battling qualities and growing maturity, A Bit Of Spirit looks set to become one of Britain’s most exciting juveniles, and wherever he heads next, he’ll be a horse to follow closely.
