Abi Thomas Aims for Newmarket Town Plate Glory on Mac’s Xpress

When 18-year-old Abi Thomas climbs aboard Mac’s Xpress at Newmarket this Saturday, she will do so with a mixture of nerves, pride and hope — and a determination to raise money for a cause close to her heart.

The young rider, who only last week collected her A-level results in business, criminology and law, is set to partner last year’s winner in the historic Newmarket Town Plate, a race steeped in history since its founding by King Charles II in 1666. And while the race carries prestige, for Thomas the day will be about far more than simply winning.

Riding for history and for charity in the Newmarket Town Plate

The teenager, who grew up in Telford, is taking part in honour of the 100th anniversary of the first female to win a race in Britain — Eileen Joel, who triumphed in the 1925 running of the Town Plate. This year’s contest also pays tribute to Joel’s daughter, the late Valda Embiricos, winner of the 1955 edition.

But Thomas’ motivation is not only historical. She is raising £600 for Spinal Muscular Atrophy after the nephew of a colleague at Clare Ellam’s yard was diagnosed with the condition. “It’s very close to home,” she said. “Little Louie is only a few months old, and if I can do something to help, then riding in this race will mean even more.”

“A little bit nervous — but excited”

Thomas admits to a flutter of nerves ahead of Saturday’s two-mile-one-furlong test, shortened from its traditional marathon trip because of the dry summer. But her enthusiasm shines through.

“I’ve been riding since I was two — showing, show jumping, dressage, you name it,” she said. “Clare is my godmother and when she asked if I wanted to ride Mac’s Xpress in this, I jumped at the chance. I won’t lie, I’m nervous, but I’m looking forward to it. It would be amazing to win it on such a significant anniversary.”

Inspired by female trailblazers Hollie Doyle and Rachael Blackmore, Thomas says their bravery gives her the belief she too can compete. “Seeing them do it makes you think: why not me?”

Hard work paying off

The fitness work has been gruelling. Alongside riding out a couple of times a week, Thomas has been attending fitness classes to prepare for the challenge. “I didn’t realise just how unfit I was,” she laughed. “But I feel much stronger now, and when I’m on a horse, I can feel the difference. I’m fitter, healthier and ready.”

Big shoes to fill with Mac’s Xpress

Mac’s Xpress, a son of Mount Nelson, has yet to score under Rules but relished last year’s Town Plate when successful under Claire Howie. Thomas is aware of the expectation.

“There’s a bit of pressure because he won it last year,” she admitted. “But he’s training well, he’s happy, and stamina isn’t an issue. Hopefully, we can do it again.”

A family day to remember

As the crowd gathers on the July Course, Thomas will have her own cheer squad in place. “My family are super excited and supportive,” she said. “It’s going to be emotional, but having them there will mean everything.”

For Thomas, a win in the Newmarket Town Plate would not only add her name to the long roll of honour but also provide a remarkable way to support a cause that matters deeply to her.
