Estrange showcased both determination and class as she captured her first Group Two victory in the prestigious Lancashire Oaks at Haydock Park. The talented four-year-old grey filly, bred and owned by Cheveley Park Stud, continues to make her mark as one of the most exciting middle-distance fillies in training.
Having already impressed with three wins from four career starts, including a convincing victory in the Lester Piggott Fillies’ Stakes over the same course and distance in May, Estrange arrived at Haydock with momentum on her side. With regular jockey Danny Tudhope back in the saddle, she once again delivered, but not without a hard-fought finish.
In a small but competitive field of four runners, Estrange positioned herself behind early leader Love Talk before making her move approaching the final quarter mile. Once she took the lead, the race turned into a true test of resilience, with Scenic launching a determined challenge in the closing stages. Estrange had to dig deep to maintain her advantage, eventually crossing the line a narrow neck ahead.
Trainer David O’Meara admitted the race did not unfold in ideal fashion for his filly, who usually prefers to settle off the pace before unleashing her finishing kick. This time, the dynamics meant she hit the front earlier than usual, making her task more testing. However, her natural ability and will to win proved decisive, with O’Meara commending both the filly’s effort and Tudhope’s judgment.
The going, slightly softened by light rainfall, also suited Estrange, though she remains versatile under different conditions. With today’s result, she has now won four of her five starts, further confirming her status as a rising star in the division.
The focus now shifts to the prestigious Yorkshire Oaks at York’s Ebor Festival in August, where connections have set their sights on testing her at the highest level. After today’s display of class and determination, Estrange appears more than ready to take on the very best.
